So it's a live action, drama version of Disney/Pixar's "UP"?

NOT bashing this movie in any way, shape or form. I loved it.

I just watched it and it's an instant classic as far as I'm concerned. But I couldn't help but notice that a lot of it was basically taken from the movie "Up". A woman dies that causes the main characters, a grumpy old man and a fat kid, to go on an adventure. Instead of a house tied to balloons, Bella's ashes are the balloons. Paula was Charles Muntz, Andy was Dug the Dog and the swat team was the pack of dogs chasing the main characters. The Huia Bird was Kevin, the Beast of Paradise Falls.

Huge fan of both! I didn't come to the conclusion myself, but now that you mention it...

Well actually this movie is taken form a book written by Barry crump. It was written way before "up" was ever made.

Nope. The Hunt for the Wilderpeople is based on the book "Wild Pork and Watercress", which was published in 1986. Up came out in 2009, 23 years after the book.
