Frank Whittle

Don't see him on the character list. Sort of like having a show about the A-bomb and Oppenheimer not being present, IMHO.

I am just watching the start of the first episode,I will see how I feel about it after watching a few episodes.

But the author's has been quoted in interviews saying that Britain had made a mess of things in the period the drama is set.

I am not sure I agree with this view.
Did Britain not help found the UN,NATO and help stop the rise of communism, free the empire, and build a welfare state

But one aspect of the story is that Britain had lost its lead in jet engines and needed German help.
I know the British government gave some jet engines to the USSR and sold them some others.
Was Britain's jet engines so bad in this period?

reply

It was the dozy Labour government who provided technical assistance and permitted the sale of a licence to produce Rolls Royce Nene engines in Russia.

The British had the best engines at the time. The Russians got a lot of German engineers and jet engine technology but didn't really get anywhere till the British gave them some engines. The best fighter of the immediate post war period, the MiG-15, had a British engine, as did the Grumman F9F, Dassault Ouragon and SAAB J-29.

Using better materials improved the durability of German engines but not the basic design. The best thing they had was air cooled turbine blades.

It would have been more believable if they'd gone for a rocket expert!

reply

The Mig was all about the wing.

The US got the rocket expert and papers realizing the eventual importance of the V-2 variants.
