trying to understand the ending (SPOILERS)

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS.

So Lindsay-Jones shoots Dieter because he feels guilt about supporting appeasement prior to the war,and to save Callum from going crazy and doing it himself?

Callum steals his friend's wife?

The other war criminal gets sent to jail for life,but anybody who knows anything about the subject knows he will get out in a few years and enjoy good life in West Germany.

But what is the writer saying?,it seems unrealistic today to be very critical of the British government's policies 1945-50,the cold war was real,Soviet actions were a real threat and we need the Germans on our side,this included the scientists.

As for appeasement,it allowed Britain to rearm,this is not how I viewed it years ago but reading books such as WAR MACHINE (forget the author's name) shows us that Britain was quick to rearm after Munich.

I liked this drama.
