Why did Will....*Possible Spoiler*

Lie about having a brother? Does this indicate that he is more sinister than we were shown? What if anything do you think he was hiding? Could him saying he was with his brother be just something his mind made up out of panic? Since the most essential parts of his story aka wife, son, livestock were true I just can't get passed wondering what it was about other than a convenient starting point of Paul's deteriorating trust of Will. Any insight is most welcome because this has been bugging me a little since I finished watching a couple hours ago.

He stood nothing to gain from making up a story about some brother he did not have.
In no way did the situation call for something like that.
There was no alibi to gain from saying he had a brother.

My theory:
Will did have someone he called his 'brother'.
The director intentionally threw in some scenes to make him seem like a liar, just because the film needed a red herring.

The idea was to make the audience become just as paranoid over Will as the main character was.
