The brother? Spoilers
Why did he lie about having a brother? Then not seeming sure that he did not know the guys they killed?

I think that was the point. Paul and his wife are paranoid, and those two scenes are there to kind of put you into Paul's headspace a bit. You don't really know if Will is lying or telling the truth. He could be lying, but both explanations he gave are entirely plausible.
