If Inception & Black Mirror Had a Baby (Spoilers)

OtherLife is a science fiction thriller directed by Ben C. Lucas. The story follows main protagonist, Ren Amari, co-founder and lead researcher for OtherLife. According to Ren, OtherLife is a "biological software" that gives the brain a virtual reality experience in which they can create memories. However, things begin to go downhill for Ren after her boyfriend dies while using OtherLife.

The movie opens with a clip of a man and woman sitting on the ocean shore in wet suits. Later, we discover the woman is Ren and the man is her brother, Jared. The clip reveals a scene where Ren is hysterically crying over her dead brother's body. What we are not sure of is whether they are in the real world or in a virtual reality created by OtherLife. However, it is this tragic scuba diving experience that drives Ren to patent OtherLife. As the movie progresses, more details from this scene are revealed and will shape the perception of what truly is reality.

We discover that Ren is working on a special formula for her comatose brother with the hopes that she can bring him out of it. Her goal is to create an interactive OtherLife experience, where people can make choices and change their reality. In this case, her brother's real-life experience hitting his head while scuba diving and drowning in shallow water.

Overall, I liked the movie. I like the mind challenge and ethical approach it presented much like Black Mirror does. It was a little Inception-essque in that Ren was able to control her experience while trapped in virtual confinement after her boyfriend died from OtherLife while under her supervision. The movie did a good job concealing true reality from virtual reality at parts, which made it even more intriguing in the end.
