S1 E1 Humping Scene...Jeezus?

I just started watching this and it's pretty good. I'm no prude but what in Gooogly's name was that humping/pounding scene all about showing Thornton pounding the lady away in bed? Why do they have to put this crap in movies and shows like this? A simple Thornton sitting on bed smoking one of his endless cigarettes with the woman in bed would have been plenty to show, "OK, he nailed her...let's move on."

Bob Thornton is not one of the most attractive looking guys anyway so it makes that scene even worst. As a matter of fact, every time I see him, I think of the blood vial. It just won't go away and I can't get it out of my head - that's who Angie was married to?

Thornton does a good job - but a Golden Globe? Wow, this is why I stopped watching awards shows years ago.

Why? Why? Whyyyyy?

Even ugly people get laid you know. It's probably how you were born.

This is my favorite imdb response ever

Love that respond...

"...Thornton pounding the lady away in bed? Why do they have to put this crap in movies and shows like this?"

I would be surprised if you don't already know the answer. Yes, most of it is crap and unnecessary but they do it for the ratings and the $$ Money, a large segment of their target audience like to watch that kind of crap. Yes, it is a substitute for better writing but it seems firmly entrenched.

Lol! If anything, your scene-suggestion would be extremely cliché in an almost funnier way. The way it was made is at the very least somewhat unique, and even time effective for the script.

Actually now that I think about it, I'd even go as far as to say it even fits the flow of the episode, kind of a "it just happened" moment.

Personally I hate it when sexual/violent material are obviously forcefully censored but also when its obviously exaggeratedly emphasized of course, the scene we got was actually neither. Hell I didnt even really remember it until I read your post. IMO it was handled pretty good, just like the rest of the show.

reply

I think it was necessary just to show us how much this woman meant to him. Keep watching.👍

reply

Exactly, and while I'd never call it the most masterfully crafted scene ever I also literally can't see ANY flaws with it, just two people having sex, nothing more nothing less.

Will definitely keep on watching bro, last night I marathoned it right up to the last episode at which point I just couldn't keep myself awake anymore, will finish it tonight, hyped as hell yo :)

Since you're a troll who cowardly didn't respond to any of the previous responses, I'm probably wasting my time:

Why would they include that scene? ANSWER: Why SHOULDN'T they?

The scene makes sense in the context, they wanted to establish the relationship between the two characters (which first is motivated by sex), and they injected some action into a not-exactly action-driven show.

Enough of a reason?

BTW, Billy Bob Thornton is not an unattractive man. Women would tell you!

reply

He pounded Angelina Jolie in the past. I would dare to say he was attractive...to her. Am i wrong?

reply

I am not a troll.
All films are cliches. From rack focusing to two-shots to LS's, there's only so many ways to make a film.
Bill is not nice looking and if you think measuring how many women he gets is a measure of his looks, then you know nothing about looks nor women. Women tend to throw themselves on men with money, even ugly ones.
There was no reason at all to show an ugly, skinny man humping a female in bed. It did absolutely nothing to move the story forward.
I've worked 30 years in the business and know better than all of you.

reply

What? 30 years in the humping business?

reply

Well okay then, professor, you instantly gained my respect with that last comment, bravo! =P Man I just love it when people feel like they have to say stupid *beep* like that. 30 years huh? Has it ever hit you that it might be time to retire?

And yeah, you know, it was kinda dark and they barely showed their silhouettes if memory serves me right, are you sure its not just your fantasy filling in the blanks? But sure man, this is interesting stuff, please tell me what old man you'd prefer to see hump? So he should definitely be a bit fatter eh?

*beep* it didn't move the story forward! Its a scene depicting affection, how the *beep* is that not moving it forward? I actually never even though about it till now but non of the times he "broke down" later on would've made any sense w/o it.

"All films are cliches. From rack focusing to two-shots to LS's, there's only so many ways to make a film"
Wow! Now that's totally NOT narrow minded at all, you sound like such a fun person.

Hahahaha .. 30 years in the biz does not automatically mean that you are any good or an expert. You might have spent 30 years cleaning out the deep fryer for craft services ..

This series has just the right amount of titillation IMHO, it is not overdone or in your face like some shows are (eg. Power, True Blood etc.) ..

All in all it is VERY well balanced IMHO.

reply

There are plenty of women who find Thornton attractive and sexy. Remember Bogart? He wasn't traditionally handsome, either. I know a little about looks and women; maybe not as much as yooooooou.

reply

you claim to have worked 30 years in the business and yet haven't learned a single thing? and your comment about women shows you haven't had much of an interaction with them.

that's called an epic fail, sorry to break it to ya, pal.

the sex scene was essential and should have been even more explicit, in my expert opinion. other than that, thornton is a very attractive man -- you should read up on the definition of "attractive".

haters make me laugh, so thanks for this!

We just finished this series and it's pretty good. I still don't get the defense and love for BB Thornton. He did a good job in his role and everyone else did too.

There was one cringe-inducing scene though, and that was when the blond was dabbing Thornton's face because he was injured. It was so, so fake - the staring, dabbing, smiling, and dabbing some more. Very poorly done.

But the love for Thornton on this thread is nothing short of amazing - defenders here think he's charming and handsome (he's neither of these) and oh, yeah, it's perfectly justifiable and adds to the story of showing his back hump up and down as he's screwing some gal in the show.

Yeah, right. And we must never forget. The vial! The vial!

reply

Don't even remember what scene you're talking about regarding the fake stuff, couldn't find it on youtube so cant be bothered.

Anyway, of course I can only talk for myself but I guess non of us just really don't care whether a main character is "charming/handsome" or not, least of all a man anyway, seeing as Im a heterosexual man myself. I'd imagine that if a not so charming/handsome character would be an issue for me I guess I'd just refrain from watching the show in question at all.

reply

Could someone explain this "vial" stuff?

I must not've seen the flick or episode to which it refers.
