I have nothing against mainstream horror but often times it's played a bit safe; even some of the more critically acclaimed MS horror.
It's definitely not a film without its issues but it's a very creative and interesting movie. It was a lot of fun.
I'd like to see more from the director and the actors did a good job. Great reveal of the monster form and it had some cool directing choices throughout.
Agreed, in fact the recent Don't Breathe movie had its ending altered because the producers grew too attached to the main protagonist (who was actually a horrible person). Originally in the film...
she was to be the impregnated host for The Blind Man's future child but apparently, as I said before, the producers grew attached to her and thought this was too depressing.
So instead they had that movie end happily ever after.
I like how the writers of SiREN gave Lily a duality regarding her character; making her both a monster and a victim, therefore when she gets her way at the end it doesn't feel completely terrible because on some deeper level I think the audience can still relate to her a bit.
I enjoyed don't breathe but I can't say I'd watch it again. I don't think they did a very good job at characterization. Nothing pulls me back but I'd watch siren again. Good rainy day movie.
And I did think they ended up with a pretty tame conclusion. I'm not opposed to the formula but I want to be effected by horror and the formula rarely does it for me. But a well-made horror is always welcomed to a fan of the genre. For me anyway.
I loved the first two VHS films, I especially loved the "Amateur Night" segment. I love that it is at its core a love story. I think the character of lily is beautiful in both forms. I feel for her when her heart is broken and I cheer for her when she protects herself and the one she has chosen. This is an amazing movie all round and I hope to see more like it.
