What is the suicide scene like?

Is it realistic? I mean, is it all slow mo and stuff?

I ask because I think in this case, the more natural approach would work better, it'd certainly be quicker that's for sure. Sometimes when there's effects with slow motion and dramatic music, it can kind of take you out of the "this was a real event" kind of thing.

I know Rebecca Hall has said how it's not a sensationalist movie, so I believe her on that. But I do wonder how they handle this particular scene, which I presume is near the end of the movie.

Just to add, I am in the UK and for some reason we do not have a release date for 'Christine', though it has been show at film festivals etc.

Yes, they show it.

reply

Yes, they show it.

Hmm, very interesting. I sort of figured Christine would say her infamous last words then the screen would cut to black with a caption saying she shot herself and died July 15, 1974. Now that I know they'll show every detail it makes me all the more curious to see the movie.

reply

Yeah, I was actually surprised myself; I figured they would do something along those lines or do a dramatic cut-away from her and you just hear the gunshot, but they don't do that at all. It was quite graphic, honestly.

reply

Do we see Christine's corpse!?

Oh gawd I dunno if I am ready for this

reply

Yeah. I watch a lot of horror/violent shows with lots of blood and gore n stuff, but I still found it kinda disturbing/shocking.

reply

It was quick, and I knew it was coming, but my heart was pounding during the entire scene. I can't imagine seeing the real thing.

*Just to add, I changed the title of this thread

I see, thanks for your reply. I am looking forward to this movie, despite the ending. I feel Rebecca has portrayed a really interesting character from the clips I've seen. I just know I'll end up rooting for Christine with the inevitable ending which hurts a bit given the outcome.

reply

It's mind-blowing.

reply

It happens REALLY quickly. She says her bit about a suicide on air for the first time ever...but then RIGHT AWAY she brings the gun out and bam. No hesitation, and no cut away from the camera. (it's framed in a long shot, but still very scary)

reply

I see what you did there.

reply

Bwahahahahaha

reply

Very sudden, Not over dramatic at all

reply

It's a quick scene, but it's still bloody and disturbing.

reply

I knew it was coming, but it was still intense, and shocking. It was quick though and I didn't think it was sensationalised and overdramatic. They executed it well.

reply

It builds to it very nicely, very suspensefully. Definitely watch the film it's brilliant.

As for the actual moment, we see it on a television screen briefly, then it cuts to a shot from the back of the studio, and then various other shots when she's motionless.

My only issue was that people who witnessed it first hand weren't shocked enough. There were no screams and the facial reactions were not all that shocked. I mean it would be the most awful thing to witness, no one should have to see something like that, but I didn't get that feeling from the supporting cast. Even her mother, who watched her daughter shoot herself on TV, didn't appear that surprised.

reply

I didn't get that impression at all. It happened so suddenly and so out of the blue that the first reaction everyone seemed to have was total shock mixed with disbelief. Everyone seemed to be questioning whether they had really seen what they thought they had just seen....as if they weren't even sure at first and hadn't yet grasped the full reality of the moment.
All that rings true for me..
When something shocking like that happens there is going to be that suspended moment before the truth sets in. Her boss even thought it to be a bad joke at first..

reply

The way it was edited and the sound design make it seem like what it would have been like to be in that room. No music swelling or extreme closeups or slo-mo. Very naturalistic.

reply

I agree with zooymtoo.
It happened so fast and it takes the mind at least 1-3 seconds to even process what you witnessed.
