POOR????

I'm sorry but how are these families poor? These people have nice cars, clothes, and places to live. They are not at all what I consider poor.

reply

Probably just in debt.

RIP Rik Mayall, you utter bastard! Your fans deeply miss you.

Listen to the show. Both families had major medical expenses and no insurance. Very likely, all of their $100,000 in debt is probably to doctors and hospitals.

So, they seem to have a salary that, more or less, pay the bills. They are not really that poor.

How is that not being poor?? I had huge medical bills years ago and couldn't afford to get by back then. I was money POOR.

At the beginning, a voiceover says "middle class", but as someone else said, it is debt for various reasons is why the money would mean a lot.

Exactly tonight's episode, one family made $60,000 a year the other $70,000. haha that is more than several years combined for some families. How the heck do you get in that much debt with a family of 3, making $70,000?

reply

You go to school, or get divorced, or cosign a loan, or have an elderly parent or have your car stolen or experience job loss, or have a lawyer, or etc.

reply

Bear in mind, the debt that is said factors in their mortgage. That is a huge chunk right there.

reply

True but think in reality people buy houses & cars they really can't afford long-term. They then end up in massive debt when things like this happen. Of course sickness can put you into debt but his family made no mention of medical bulls or taking care of an elderly parent. They specifically mentioned a huge mortgage & tax as the big problems.

The problem is that a lot of times people live above there means. I think that people can come out of debt once sacrifice is done. So that means two car households become one. Expensive possessions are sold . Everyone just need the bare essentials: shelter, tv , phone, food, cloths.

It is interesting how you consider TV and phone to be "bare essentials." In my third grade social studies class we learned "needs" are food, clothing and shelter. Anything else is a "want." If people today kept this in mind (including the idea that "needs" don't have to be designer labels and McMansions), they wouldn't have inflicted the kind of financial damage on themselves that is seen on this show.

reply

They aren't. They are all middle class. The description on imdb sucks.
