I know he said she thought the pebbles looked like rabbits when she was a kid but the pebble he handed her didn't look like a rabbit!

If you look at it closer (and through the imagination of a child), it does. Look at it again when she picks it up and holds it. The rabbit is facing to the left. The ears are folded down over the back.
It's more of a silhouette of a rabbit, similar to this, but with the ears laying down across the back rather than perked up.
