a tale of obsession (quoted from one of the reviews)

No comments at all as of July 2014, so lets try this one to get things going

I came away from seeing this thinking you really need to have read the book to get all you should from from this film.
I say this because I ended up being a bit bemused .. our lead characters.. were we supposed to be sympathetic, or even understanding of them? I mean, we early on learn 'he' (Sorry, I've forgotten his name)can recall exactly how many times they made love, which straight away struck me as slightly obsessive, but by the time we learn he has kept every cigarette but, I was decidedly thinking creepy obsessive rather than dedicated lover..

People who have read the book .. was this the point?
