It still sucks that...

I have to introduce The Muppets to my kids in this reality-bullcrap manner. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the old formula. This version doesn't engage children. How sad.

It stead of introducing them to this, why don't you show them one of the movies instead?

reply

Reality?

Dude, the show is still the Muppet Show, but instead of an outdated Variety Show it is a Talk Show. I don't get the complaints. People are freakin silly. After all, name ONE freakin variety show on tv these days?

They used to show the backstage stuff on the original Muppet Show, the only different is that they talk to the camera and they sometimes leave the theater where the show is filmed....there are humans other than the one celebrity guest.

Honestly, if you have that much of a problem with it go buy one of the old season DVDs. You can get them very cheap these day.

...............ZING!

If only you could buy the DVDs of the first three seasons of The Muppet Show or show your kids the old movies which are also available on DVD if you hate this show so much... How sad.

You realize Jim Henson himself said that the Muppets were never set to be geared fro kids, In The Muppet Show they had drinking & smoking & it was more of a family variety show. There was also a very early version of The Muppet show called something like The Muppet Show: Sex & Violence. The only really kid related Muppet stuff were Sesame Street, Muppet Babies & maybe Fraggle Rock. And when they first started promoting it they made it very clear that it would be more of an adult themed show.

I wish I could find that interview Henson did in the 80s from his studio where he was playing Rolf. The reporter asked Rowlf the Dog if there were certain words he couldn't say on television, and he said, "SOB. Think about that one for awhile."

The Land of Gorch sketches from SNL were adult humor. This show is middle school humor deluded into thinking it's mature. The majority of the audience simply saw through it.

True. Not a kids show.

I don't think the failure of the show was the adult humor...

...the problem was that it was BORING adult humor.

It lacked the zaniness the Muppets were known for and instead went too much for awkward adult humor that's too typical in most adult sitcoms these days. You were basically watching a standard NBC comedy with animal puppets.

Thing is my family DID try this show out. And the adult humor was simply embarrassing. It was not very family friendly... and many of the jokes came off as bland. My 7 year old son really tried to like this show JUST because it HAD Muppets in it! We ALL love the Muppets... so when we sat down and tried the first few episodes and were treated to more lame Modern Family style of show... with more adult humor than I cared for... it just wasn't the muppets for us. Then after missing an episode or two, we forgot what station carried it or what time it came on!!! Talk about so memorable a show you can't remember where it when it came on! I'd rather they went back to the musical/concert formula. Even for back when the original show came out. Variety shows were a bit in the past, back THEN. But we loved each and every episode, and musical number and the funny antics that played out sometimes during the 'performances'. I hate they won't go back to the original formula... and I remember seeing the Muppets Live being advertised... but again... it's all about the time slot. And sometimes I think the time these shows come on hurts them too. And we really only need a 30 minute Muppet show, not and hour time slot. Yeah, we can get more air time with the characters, but then they're forced to fill that void with jokes and visual zaniness and it can only go so far for so long. So 135 minutes for 3 weeks of material for a Muppet show to keep the audience fresh or entertained in this day and age... with kids that'll stick their head back in a tablet after 5 minutes and saying 'meh'... and ignore what's on the TV... I think they've got to do better than this. We don't need over-fetched adult drama over their internal lives. We just need good stories and put some of the characters outside their box a bit for good humor... but not in OUR box, nor compared to other shows like Modern Family either... I'd rather something along the lines where they have the theater back, and doing their shows... bring on some of the new annoying overpaid of today's celebrities, and some not so 'in', like a few You Tube crappy people that can't act, and insert a little back story BETTER than the original. Mix it up... have some episodes link together and most not. It could be a 'little' adult, but not over done, not lewd. We need another Muppet show as bad as we need another Star Trek show... really. I feel there's a void in television that's been missing for quite a while. There's not much I watch on TV anymore really... And some of the shows my wife still watch just need to end... that have been on the air for over 11 years! We really need some new shows, and some TV that a bit more in the nostalgic realm too. If I'm understood at all... I know I'm about as clear as butane here... (And while Modern Family has it's awards too... I can only take THAT show for so long too...) I'll admit it can be funny, but it really grates on my nerves sometimes.

I agree. The revamp sucks. The show was so hilarious before the Christmas break.

They didn't last because puppets were in it! And it was on primetime! Adults do not generally take other adults seriously who watch puppets. I've had girls come into my apartment while playing my TiVo. Just yesterday, exgirlfreind came over, said "What the hell are you watching?? Are you watching the Muppets??" The guests always look like they took a bite out of a lime every time they say it.

People like Kermit, yes, but do not respect puppetry. Not to mention how much comedians have helped propel hate for, "prop comics" including, especially, "ventriloquist puppets!" They are my fav! Love Jeff Dunnum! I don't understand the hate. Joe what's his name, big mouth with a radio show obsessed over hating them, especially, my fav Carrot Top, having his own Vegas shows.

Cartoons like family guy, ok at worst you may be taken as juvenile but it is widely watched for years so it is "normal." But puppets have never been accepted as normal adult entertainment. It's unfortunate that we still have labels in society but for the Muppets to be taken seriously as a valid form of adult entertainment, it needs to be over the top, be an equal opportunity offender, have big man humor. Not just imply drinking & hangovers, but have rehab & show it. And feature more extreme adult humor along with more pop culture and feature guests such as the Kardashians. In other words, sell out big time.

But then it wouldn't be the Muppets? I never saw the sex and violence
Muppets so I'm not sure.
