it seems to be hated by the cannes critics...

I just read some cannes review and they all seemed to have said something negative about the film. That's very unexpected since the cast seems extremely promising! Some said the major problem was that the story lacked some sparks.

Lots of my favourite directors are in competition this year but Dolan's film is the only one I strongly root for. That's a shame!
Anyone happened to have watched the film already? Were the critics right?

reply

It doesn't seems to be hated, it is hated.

I don't know if there's anybody who watched the film in Cannes in here, actually. So lets wait for the release date.

Nolan, I love you forever!

reply

You sure? It got 7 minutes standing ovation.

I am not sure how good/bad the film actually is, I hope it is good, but I am sure there are lots of negative reviews out there:

I know critics are not always correct, but their opinions do matter.

I guess in Cannes, standing ovation doesn't mean that much. The majority of the films received standing ovation. Better than getting boo-ed at least, I would say.

It was only hated by american critics for some reason.

Rest of the world praised it mostly.

Then again your link shows otherwise, maybe our local press is biased towards Dolan.

reply

I find it funny that many said Dolan made Marion Cotillard look awful on screen and he was the only director who gave her an award in Cannes. She's now in the cast of a film awarded with le Grand Prix, that's awesome!

Spotnick -- Americans have still not generally become comfortable with gay themes, or expressions in creativity. They would prefer every film about the topic be called a "gay film" and debased. Don't you watch the high-testosterone Hollywood movies? They are all about teaching American males how to "be real men and shoot a gun, beat someone up, control your women." Watching men make love is not on their agenda. Watching women make love, however, is one of their favorite porn sequences. Weird.

Actually, it won the Grand Prix Award at Cannes, not the Palm D'Or, which, in my opinion, has a better selection throughout history.

Most American critics hate this film, even though many of them are fans of his previous works like Mommy, Tom at the farm,...
The critics complained about the storyline and the characters. It's quiet a shame because I have just watched the first trailer and it looks absolutely amazing!

But WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF is an iconic movie. Could the fact that it was a bunch of people screaming at each other in ENGLISH, and with TAYLOR and BURTON, and made in the GRAND OL' USA, might have something to do with the way the two films are analyzed? And WAOVW was in black&white, for God's sake.

At the rate of decline of movie criticism, a actor would have to murder someone to deserve a paragraph of print.

I watched the movie, and I could say if Dolan is hated because he is a strong defender of the things he believe, this movie is not making so much justice for him.

The movie is really good, but I think the idea that the prodigal son will be hated for being gay and because he will reveal that he is going to die, is the worst thing he tries to defend on his film.

The prodigal son could had leave his family for another reasons and going back for other details and voila... he could get the same results with a family like that.

And the main character is not doing so much, I think is the worst main character he adapted into his films...

reply

I don't think he was hated for being gay, to be exact I don't even think he was hated in particular. I think the family just felt they were abandoned by him since he left the family without leaving any explanation.

Negative reviews came from Americans who were too busy reading subtitles to actually take in the film itself. It is impossible to fully comprehend, let alone review, a film unless you understand both the source language and culture.
