why are they asking?

For money from people? Can't he or they afford to do it out of their own Hollywood pocket? I'm sure Alan has way more money than the rest of us.

They don't want to use their own money. I loved this show, can't wait for se2, but I'm not going to give money to celebrities to fund projects. No idea why people are suckers and do this all the time. Maybe they feel like they are closer to the actor or feel like they are part of something. No idea. These people are not starving artists... Whole concept is dumb if you ask me.

Well Brent Spiner produced a very similar webshow called 'Fresh Hell' out of his own pocket, he had to quit after 2 seasons because he couldn't afford to keep doing it even though he wanted to do many seasons and loved doing it.
Not many TV actors can afford to splash a million dollars plus on making webshows like Con Man for their fans I'd bet.
In fact I saw a cult film actor (that's been active for 36 years) admit even tho he had recent films out, he'd not actually worked in over a year and begged his fans on Facebook to donate money to help him pay to take his beloved dog to the vets cause he had no money. Sad but true.

First, no, most actors do not have the money to completely fund a series, even a webseries. Those cost millions of dollars to produce. Second, in order to get distribution for a series, they have to show someone that it will win an audience. If they run a successful crowdfunding campaign, they get the funding and they win the audience needed to get distribution on board. Two problems solved at once.

Besides, it's not as though you get these series for free. Whether it's through watching commercials, paying to see episodes, or paying for a streaming/cable service, you're still shelling out for this stuff. With crowdfunding, you just cut out the middle man.

Ok that makes total sense. Thanks for that answer. ? Especially the middle man part, cutting that put is very smart. You're smart for knowing this.

You're welcome. This is obviously a personal project for Tudyk and even Fillion, but they still had to deal with the realities of the biz if they wanted to get the project off the ground, let alone greenlight more seasons. They had to be producers as well as actors. This is what producers do.
