FWIW I don't think we're supposed to feel sorry for the guy.

I think the point of this movie is, and it could have been titled, "The making of a pimp."

We can think of pimps as just evil humans, rotten to the core, but that doesn't help us understand these people, how they come to be, how they come to devalue other humans. Of course, we don't know about the dad and his story, but in modern-day Mexico, someone born into a family like that, EVEN IF maybe they have the potential to be a decent person, they get sucked into the system and there are no good choices they can make.

I think that was the point. And the film maker's perspective was just brutal realism. You know that adage for screenwriting, "Don't tell me, show me." That's what he was doing. I think we're supposed to make up our own minds how we feel about any of the characters, but we've gotten a glimpse into a world that is rarely seen, rarely talked about, and that is the 3D humans who make up the sex traffickers.

Seeing the world through their eyes isn't supposed to make us like them or root for them, just to see how they fit in to the victimization of young women.

PS: I said "modern-day Mexico" - could also be the US as far as that goes - I think the US is in the top 5 countries in the world for sex-trafficking of children - yep, up there with Thailand. It's a sickness all around us.

I never got that we are supposed to feel sorry for him. He was evil. Not necessarily his fault as he was brought up by evil people, but he was still evil and heartless. His mother was a willing participant in the sadistic misogynistic behavior of the men in the family.

In the beginning, I did sort of see Ulises as a victim, but my sentiments changed quickly, especially when I saw how he treated Marta. When they were showing his face as he wipped her with that belt, I was getting angrier and angrier. The fact that Ulises built a real relationship with Marta, romanced her, lived with her, and still did that to her shows that he is just like his parents and brother. Takes a cold and evil person to do that.
