Shaking hands with women...

Re: Handshakes

In the feminism episode, the women were put off because the director did not offer to shake their hands. In the USA, men were trained not to shake hands with women unless the women extended their hands first. It's considered rude for a man to touch a woman unless she consents, so this old rule is meant to protect women, not hurt them. (In a political documentary from the 90s, presidential candidate Bob Kerry is seen chastised by a woman voter for not knowing it's rude to try to shake hands with a woman.)

In the US business world, men will now extend hands to women in professional situations, but it's still not clear if that should happen in social situations.

In this episode it was a social situation, and the women sat there and did not offer their hands or signify they were open to shaking hands. Then they bitched about it afterwards.

So, ladies, if shaking hands is in order and the man in front of you is older than Aziz Ansari, you might need to lift or extend your hand a little so the man knows it's okay to shake hands with you.

I watched all the episodes of this show and thought it was pretty good.

I've spent my whole life living in the USA. Born and raised. I've never heard this until now. I would not hesitate to shake any woman's hand in a professional setting. Your generalization makes no sense.

reply

He's right, if the woman extends her hand first, shake it. If not just say hi and smile.

Why don't you go suck a dude off. You are a masculinist douche who obviously hates women.

Everything you said is wrong. I have always shook women's hands in both professional and social situations and it has never been an issue. Don't come here and bitch about women or feminism. The dude didn't shake Rachel or Denise's hands because he was a sexist man-pig scum douche and so are you. Filthy penis monster scum.

*To all the typical masculinist scum on IMDB*
-"Your ridiculous and mens rights is nothing"

I don't know if this is supposed to be an attempt at a joke or trolling, but you sound like a complete moron. Did the guy make a social faux-pas by not shaking the hands of the two women? Probably. Is he a sexist monster? Hardly. This is the director who changed the entire commercial and ended up cutting out multiple roles for men to make the women of the commercial the centerpiece. I'd hardly call the man who did that to help out the women actors get more screen time and a more substantial role a sexist.

Television is a vice; film is an addiction.

49 year old female. Born and raised in the US. Never heard of this in my life. My husband shakes women's hands and I have shook the hands of many many men, without extending my hand first to let them know it was okay. lol. This is the silliest thing I've ever heard.

reply

Ok even if we pretend that your not shaking women's hands thing is correct, then the director still completely blew the two women off... He could have at least introduced himself, minus the handshake.

reply

Just watched the episode in question, and I was going to say that.

I was absolutely raised to shake a man's hand, but wait to see if a woman offered me her hand for a handshake, but that doesn't really seem appropriate these days.

Frankly, I generally snuffle a bit, claim to have flu and turn down handshakes altogether these days. People are nasty.

I thought that was the point of the exchange, rather than handshaking or not.

reply

Dude wtf are you talking about. No one knows what you're talking about.

reply

For me, it is different, though. I hardly introduce myself to women I don't know when my friends are nearby because of self-esteem issues, not because I consider them lower than men. I just stand on the side with my friends until they interduce me to them.
