Best animated picture contender

Good thing toy story 4 didn't come out this year.

It has been a strong year for animated films. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse definitely deserves to be nominated for best animated film. My pick would be the fantastic Isle of Dogs. Incredibles 2 was great too. I also enjoyed The Grinch and Ralph Breaks the Internet.

reply

Huh, as a big Wes Anderson fan I was disappointed by “Isle of Dogs”. I really liked “Incredibles 2” though.

reply

I agree. This is definitely a strong year for animated films especially compare to last year.

Well, providing Toy Story 4 was/is anywhere near as good as Spider-Verse (I imagine most are expecting it to be nothing short of amazing), then I wouldn’t underestimate the latter. It can be argued that based on its popularity alone the next Toy Story would have to be just good and it’ll potentially pick up all the acclaim and recognition an animated film can possibly receive.

No matter, I do believe the game-changing and highly acclaimed Into the Spider-Verse could conceivable give TS4 a run for its money if it had been released in the same year as it (Frozen 2 and The Lion King certainly aren’t out of the conversation either).

There’s been some very good animated films this year, however this new spin on Spider-Man is legitimately a great film. And with all the glowing reviews it has garnered, I say it is hands down the top contender for best animated picture. It should be.

I didn't plan to see it in 3d but that's how I ended up seeing it. I usually avoid 3d films but I think it worked for this, it is about multiple dimensions after all.

reply

I was actually planning to see it in 3D but then opted to see it in 2D IMAX instead (worth it as always). But yeah, I think this is a movie that will greatly benefit from 3D.

reply

I was going to see it in 3D last night but the only availability at that theater was IMAX 3D at 10:45 p.m.!

No RealD or anything.

reply

The theater I go to usually shows every superhero movie in IMAX 3D, but that wasn’t the case with Spider-Verse (Actually, turns out there ‘ s going to be showings for it at 10:00 pm starting tomorrow lol.)

Though it can depend on the movie, normally I prefer IMAX 3D over regular 3D. Gigantic screen and thunderous sound? Definitely more immersive, I think.

And Toy Story 4 was also planned for a 2018 release instead of Incredibles 2 before Pixar decided to switch them around; since the latter already finished up production much earlier while TS4 is required for a little revision. So TS4 may now have a better chance to end up on top as next year's contender. Now Spider-verse could be neck-and-neck with either Incredibles 2 and Isle of Dogs for the big prize. Now I haven't yet seen Spider-verse (heard some great things about it though), but I still have a lot of catching up to do with holiday-released films and some other award contenders like The Favorite.

The Toy Story series is so overrated.

reply

That's debatable. I just feel like it's the default winner no matter whst. Most Pixar movies win automatically.

reply

Spider-Man!

reply

I loved everything about this movie EXCEPT the animation.

reply

BOOM!

It didn’t need the ultimate movie award statue to prove its greatness, but man did it deserve it big time. What a work of art.

So glad to be wrong about this not winning best animated pic.
