I understand the parents decided to conceive after he received the diagnosis. Losing a parent is about the most devastating experience for a child, no matter how hard you try to prepare it, it's still a child. So the kid will have to deal with that. And Mr Gleason repeats numerous times that he wants to pass on as much as he can to his son. Considering the genetics of ALS, he might be passing on the disease itself and subject his son to a cruel life and death. I understand this is a highly emotional topic but as a neurologist, I wouldn't throw around the word "hero" in this case.
shareFamilial ALS is only about 10% of the population of ALS cases and you can identify that particular biomarker. Steve Gleason's is sporadic as is mine.
shareWith all due respect Doctor, I admire Steve and Michelle for continuing to live life as normal as possable.That attitude will play a big roll in his fight against ALS.
My nephew was diagnosed with ALS at the age of 24. He was engaged to be married 3 months later. The wedding took place as planned. Today he is 52y/o the father of 2 and a grandfather of 1. I can only imagine what would have happened if he decided to pull the plug 28 years ago.

PS Steve is a hero to us here in New Orleans because he blocked a punt at the first game played in our superdome since it was damaged from Hurricane Katrina.
