So the guy blocks a punt.....

And this makes him a hero? No disrespect for his blight and suffering, but how does the one blocked punt make him a hero? What about the player that missed his blocking assignment?

It wasn't about the block. It was the first game in the Super Dome since the hurricane and it fired up a down city.

Watch the movie. Then you won't ask this question.

New Orleans native and Katrina survivor here. Steve Gleason is a hero because of his personal and physical fight against ALS but mostly for what he did for our city that Monday night in 2006.

Hurricane Katrina not only took our homes, jobs, cars and some lives, it took our spirit. We lived in trailers with family, friends, neighbors and coworkers scattered miles apart. We decorated those trailers and cooked holiday dinner in a RV oven. For some, we were forced to live on disaster unemployment because she destroyed our place of employment. Disaster food stamps because our unemployment pay fell into the povety level. We worshiped in churches that were unfamiliar where prayer became more powerful then ever. We carried folders and date books with important insurance papers and phone numbers for FEMA, insurance companies, contractors etc. Just like ALS sucks, life sucked for us and our beloved Saints were relocated for the entire 2005 season because our dome was damaged.

Fast forward to the first home game on that Monday night 2006 in our newly repaired dome. Along comes Steve Gleason, a long haired "complete cheese ball" turned hero. When he blocked that punt it was the rebirth of a city that was still drowning from flood waters that receded over a year ago. We are diehard Saints fans down here. That night we were struggling to breath and broken from a year of picking up the pieces, rebuilding our lives and trying to be normal again Thanks Steve Gleason from a fellow New Orleanian. #awsomeainteasy
