Cannes 2016 and win?

So, Dardennes usually go to Cannes and win, except when Marion Cotillard stars their film. Can we expect them to win again in 2016? If yes, which prize? I feel like Haènel will be extreordinary in this.

reply

Best Actress would make sense (as I share the feeling that Adèle will be superlative), although a third Golden Palm might also be in the realm of possibilities, if the film ranks among their very best works. And I wouldn't complain about it, even if I always dreamed Haneke would be the first one to pull the feat. None of the Dardenennes' latest works really had the same punch of their first ('La promesse'. 'Rosetta', 'Le fils') IMO, but this one sounds very fresh and unique. Hopefully it will be their most impactful film since then.

reply

I love all their films, they all deserved prizes in Cannes IMO. I think the only one thatdidn't was TDON, which was a beautiful story they wrote. But Cotillard in it kinda excluded all chances of it being noticed. Like it happened to Rust and Bone in 2012.

Haènel is very beloved in France, she's 27 and already has two Césars. If the film is good, she'll definitely receive another nomination and chances of winning best actress at the festival will be huge. Other awards it will depend on competition. I read the plot and it seems a very intense and moving film, can't wait!

reply

They're among my favourite filmmakers. I liked all their movies exept for TDON, which I couldn't really buy. It's just that the first three had a special impact for me that none of the others could really replicate. Especially 'Le Fils', which I consider one of the most extraordinary films I've ever seen.

I've seen Haenel in several films by now and I'm hugely impressed. I can see why she is so beloved. She oozes natural charisma, but her acting is also very natural, unaffected and no-nonsense. The perfect combination of a natural star quality and an anti-diva persona, I would say.

reply

Oh, I really loved TDON. I liked the story and the cast, it was very moving. POVs hahaha

Haènel has a mix of natural beauty and masculinity and her charisma is amazing. She can express emotions very well too. I don't think she deserved le César last year because Binoche was better IMO, but she did an amazing job in Combattants. She was very funny, I liked to see this side of hers. She's a bit shy in real life, it's kinda cute.

reply

Yes, Haenel's tomboyish side has to be one of her great selling points. It adds to her screen persona, but it's not too strong to take away from her attractiveness.

I like her César win last year. Can't say I loved 'Les Combattants', but I will remember it for sure. Especially the ending. It was a weird movie not without its charm for me. I thought Binoche was more deserving in 'Camille Claudel 1915' (for which she wasn't even nominated) the previous year than she was in 'Sils Maria', where I thought she could've done even more with that role. I don't subscribe to the belief that Kristen Stewart (whom I found rather uneven) stole the movie. But I think that no one would've said that had Binoche played her role to its full potential.

I'll be curious to see what Adèle will do in the future. I think this Dardenne project may turn to be her biggest showcase so far: when you have a great movie around you (hoping this one is), it's easier to reach new acting heights. I think I read she speaks English and German fruently (that wouldn't be a surprise since her father is an Austrian translator)? If that's the case, she might enjoy a nice international career. If she's interested in it, that is.

reply

I loved it, it was a romantic comedy well developed and full of charismatic characters, it was amazing. But Idon't think it was a César performance, I liked Binoche and even Cotillard more than her. But I'm not pissed at her win, she was good too hahaha Camille Claudel was a superb job by Juliette, I don't think she was even nominated, which was cruel.

Haènel can speak English well? Damn! I found this video from 2010 I think, her English is very good indeed! She must have improved it a bit in the past 6 years.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5p-fELP5wc

If Dardenne's film is well received and wins awards at Cannes and other festivals, that will give her a lot of boost abroad. I don't know her a lot mut she seems prett opened to offers...if someone asked her to do a foreign film she would do it. If good of course. She has a lot of potential.

reply

Thanks for the link!

And she does speak a fine German too. I was sure that I'd read somewhere she speaks fluent English, German and a bit of Norwegian. If that's the case, it may help her international career, but it's up to her. In Hollywood, European actors tend to be typecast as accented foreigners even if they speak a fine English (and they're often bland supporting roles). If she were to be offered parts like Carice Van Houten's Hollywood roles, I imagine that she would prefer to stay a leading lady in France.

reply

If you find videos of her speaking other languages please send them!

Well, Cotillard still plays many typecast roles and she started with supporting roles. She managed to have a very decent career abroad after a few years, so Haènel can do the same if she delivers great performances. Having a good English is already amazing for her cause most French actors have a crap English, including famous ones in France. She just needs to be patient, she won't receive an amazing role right away.

I'm curious to see what role Adele Exarchopoulos has in The Last Face, by Sean Penn. And how he will promote that with his ex Charlize Theron hahaha

She's making her stage debut at the Atelier theatre in a few days, mind you. I had already read that she'd voiced her interest in doing more stage work and a few less movies. I think she said no to 'La Belle Saison' among other films.

I keep hearing that Arnaud de Pallières' "Orpheline" might also go to Cannes, so she may have a double bid for the award if her role in that one is also juicy. As one of the rare few who loved de Pallières 'Michael Kohlhaas' (which was in competition 3 years ago), I'm really looking forward to this.

reply

Oh that's amazing news! I didn't know she did theatre too. If you find videos please send me them!

Yeah, I read about Orpheline having chances over there, so Adèle would have two major films. But I think Dardennes is the one that will give her more exposure. She might receive a César nod for the other one but the brothers flick is much bigger, their names are more powerful over there.

I didn't watch that film, I watched The Hunt though. AMAZING. Such an Mads is such underrtaed actor...

I most certainly will.

Yeah, I read about Orpheline having chances over there, so Adèle would have two major films. But I think Dardennes is the one that will give her more exposure.

Yes, pity it's been a long time since festivals have given conjoined acting awards for multiple roles. It also remains to be seen how the roles are distributed in 'Orpheline'. There's plenty of talent in it (nice to see the two Adèles together).

She might receive a César nod for the other one but the brothers flick is much bigger, their names are more powerful over there.

Wonder if she'll also be César eligible for the Dardennes one since she's French and part of the funding will probably be? Marion was for the last one, which surprised me, since the film was nominated in the 'Best Foreign Picture' category, after all.

I watched The Hunt though. AMAZING. Such an Mads is such underrtaed actor..

Agreed.

reply

Oh yeah, I forgot Exarchopoulos was in Orpheline too! Man this HAS to go to Cannes!

I think Marion was nominated for Dardennes because the film was successful in US and because of her name. French Academy loves her too. Adèle seems to be beloved but she's still building her image, I think they rather nominate her for a French film than a foreign one, which probably won't be a hit like TDON was in other countries.

reply

Gee, just read that 'La fille inconnue' is set for a 5 October release in France. That's an awful lot to wait.

Haenel was also praised in 'Les Ogres' this month, so she's got multiple César bids. Exarchopoulos has just been in the so-so received 'Éperdument'. I'm looking forward to her first Best Actress nom after winning only for Best Newcomer a couple years ago because of a stupid technical rule, but I'm not sure if either this or 'Orpheline' will be her ticket to it.  Adèle must be the name mostly associated with talent with this new generation of French actresses.

reply

Oh but that's normal. They expect awards for the film, October is a baity release in France. We'll have to wait but that's normal. It will be worth it, you'll see.

If Haènel has many praises, she'll end up with one nod in the end, don't worry. Probably the most French one hahahahaha I was expecting more from Eperdument, I love Gallienne, that's sad. But promotion wasn't strong for it, bad release date. She'll be in The Last Face though, which is also going to Cannes. Maybe that one will be better received!

I think Adèle is a golden girl in France but she's not known overseas. If Dardennes movie works out and she wins major awards in festivals, she might receive some attention. Since her English is good, who knows a decent role abroad?

reply

Just checked Adèle H's page and she's doing a German film next! So, yeah, her linguistic skills should definitely help her have a nice and varied career.

reply

Oh that's really cool! Nice to see her doing all these different films, different languages.

"Old Times" opened yesterday evening at the Atelier:

https://twitter.com/Alexandre_Sim/status/714928139676291076

Looks it's a bit too early for reviews. It's not even her debut, apparently, but her second appearance on the Parisian stage and third play altogether. My bad.

Recently she's given this funny interview:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tpy5zdQHRHQ

At around 9.05, the interviewer asks her if she's playing the role originated by Delphine Seyrig in 1971 and she doesn't have the foggiest notion of what he's talking about. That's even more funny considering that she had been briefly attached to Catherine Corsini's 'La Belle Saison' in the role of Delphine Benchiessa, which the director had written as a homage to.. yeah, that Delphine. My first supicions arose since a recent book of César tales dedicated to Haenel a chapter called 'Histoires d'Adèle H." and said about her the famous like Delphine's Fabienne Tabard says in "Stolen Kisses": [i]I'm not an apparition, I'm a woman".. When an interviewer addressed this issue, I had the impression Adèle was bypassing the question.

When she received the Romy Schneider award last year, she also said that she hadn't seen any of Schneider's films, which sounds particularly ironic, since she's half-Austrian. 

 you Adèle, but your director girlfriend has to teach you many things.

reply

hahahahahahahahaahahahahhahaha I admire her honesty but she needs to prepare herself more for questions. Even if she didn't know about Delphine or Schneider (not a crime), she should at least pretend she knew them or find out another way to answer about them without saying "I never saw a movie with Romy".

She's still dating that woman? I thought they had broken up.

reply

Yeah, I mean: you're receiving the Schneider award, at least watch a couple of Romy's movies before the ceremony, so that you can at least answer something, if you're asked about her. As for Delphine, since her name and echo somehow seems to resonate around her wherever she goes, she could have made a quick search about her at least. I'm sure she'd be flattered by the comparison, if she knew about these ladies. If you get to collect a Schneider award without bothering to find out who the person is, one can actually wonder if it really means anything to you. But at least she looks a bit embarrassed at the end of the interview, maybe she'll avoid this kind of mistakes in the future? One can always hope!

By the way, I have the impression that Adèle is not playing the role of Kate (originated by Delphine) in "Old Times", but that of Anna, which was originally played by Françoise Fabian, whom she beat for the Supporting Actress César 2 years ago. Wonder if she knows her at least?  Oh, well, she has all the time to learn: I'll cut her some slack.

Not sure about her relationship with Sciamma. I had heard that they had split, but are now back together. But I don't really know.

reply

I agree with all you said. She's still young, I'm sure she'll learn about how to behave and what to say in interviews like this one to avoid criticism. She's lucky she's still beginning to build her career so not many people are watching these stuff. If Dardennes film is huge, she better be ready!

I think they split last year but I didn't find any news about them getting back together after. Maybe they are too discrete to let people know. In Cannes we might have the answer =)

reply

She gave a radio interview earlier this week: it's over an hour long, so I'm waiting to listen to it when I get the time. After I do, I'll let you know if she said anything about Céline at all!

reply

hahahaha Ok!

Have you seen this first photo from the film?

A brief trailer of the "Old Times" production:

http://www.theatre-atelier.com/old-times-lo1024.html

So far, the reviews on her performance seem pretty mixed (in "Old Times" that is). 

reply

Oh what a beautiful image! Just in time for Cannes announcement! I think she'll have two films in Cannes, Orphéline and La Fille Inconue.

It happens, nobody pleases all the time.

reply

Aaaaand the day come. Seriously, could someone think that the film wouldn't come to the Festival? Wishing Adèle good luck, although the Best Actress field seems quite competitive this year.

P.S: A recent article still mentioned Sciamma as her partner, if it's anything to come by... As you previously mentioned, we may have the answer in a month or so.

reply

Wow, what a surprise! hahahahahaha too bad Orphelines didn't make it. I think Huppert has more chances to win than her, including Césars, but I can't wait to see her with Dardennes over there!

Oh nice, maybe they are still together after all.

reply

Huppert has a fantastic role on paper, but will Verhoeven deliver? He's pretty inconsistent. She also has 2 wins already: I know many jury presidents say that they don't want to be influenced by past awards, but the fact that multiple winners are so rare is telling. But keep an eye on Theron, too. Jury president may be a bit biased towards her.  For Ruth Negga, it will be a great start for an Oscar compaign. Hope Miller is more unconventional than that (think he should). But I also hear Sonia Braga has a great role. And we already know Almodóvar's lead has.

Should be an exciting race.

reply

I think Elle has screened for a few people and they loved it. Huppert seems amazing in it. I feel that Last Face will be a bomb, it will disappoint. Well reminded about Negga, she's an early Oscar contender for her role in Loving, who knows? Winning in Cannes would be perfect for her campaign. Aquarius seems different, I'm curious about it. Competition will be strong this year! One of the best lineups ever!

reply

Ah, thanks for the info about "Elle". Anyways, Huppert is amazing in everything. She can't win a major award for every A+ performance she gives, but, if she were to historically receive a third Best Actress award here, maybe it could also give her a boost for some American awards later in the season. Who knows? That would be great.

"Last Face" may indeed be a bomb given that it took so long to release it, but, last year, Emmanuelle Bercot won an acting prize for Maïwenn's film, which was one of the very worst reviewed titles of the entire festival. So never say never.

Now we also have Farhadi's "The Salesman" to account for. I think it may be poised to win something bigger, but he always writes great roles for his actors.

reply

American awards I doubt it, only if the film has really amazing reviews and it's a hit in France. But I still doubt it. I can only see French awards for Huppert right now.

Last Face had to reshoot and everything, Theron had Mad Max last year...I think Penn did right in waiting another year for the film. And bad reviews in Cannes don't mean zero awards. They have awarded poorly reviewed films before, they also choose people based on their relevance, lobby, how baity is the project, etc. There's a whole PR game behind the scenes.

Farhadi is an amazing director, I'm excited about his movie too! This whole lineup is just perfect, I hope the next two weeks go pretty fast and Cannes finally starts!

reply

Yeah, the prospect of American awards for Huppert is a bit optimistic, since they never really cared about her before, but the distributor might choose to give her a decent push, at least. If the movie's trivia section is anything to go by, several big international names were considered for the role. She may get some critics' mentions at least (if the movie is well received, of course).

I agree that there are several exciting titles in the lineup and Farhadi's entry just made things better. I'm only disappointed that it was pretty predictable (it's the usual suspects again and again, these days).

reply

So, our Best Actress winner isn't the one we would have immediately thought of, wasn't she?
