WTF

Light is introduced smiling at a Misa Amane concert

Light is pretty much a pu$$y compared to his anime/manga self

L wears shoes, sits like a normal person, and takes off his shirt (for fan service, obviously). Also, he hasn't really devoured any sweets.

Near is a girl

Mellow is a puppet

This is as far away from Death Note as one can get. This matches Shyamalan's Last Airbender as far as adaptions go.

I haven't watched this considering I only just found out about it, but according to this, it was advertised as being different from the manga/anime, complete with new characters and new ending.

I honestly don't mind adaptations being different from the source material. Gives you more of a reason to watch it. If it was exactly the same as the manga, anime or even the movies, what would be the point of watching it? Hell, what would be the point of making it?

reply

I agree, what would be the point of watching it if it was exactly the same?

reply

I concur, I've read the manga and watch the anime, if this was exactly the same as the anime or manga, I wouldn't waste my time with it. But knowing it's different actually got me interested.

Never said this should be a completely faithful adaption. But this is not Death Note; this is a fan fiction. Why adapt a source material if not a modicum of the original will be retained? Characters take a 180. This is a money grab. It panders to the 14 year old K-drama demographic. I can't imagine any true Death Note fans enjoying this show without flipping their $h!t.

And there is no point in remaking perfection in the first place. A spin-off with L and Near would be cool, but between the manga, show, and movies, we didn't need a poor imitation.

I like it

I just watched 5 episodes and it seems they're moving closer to the anime but with a few twists. Kinda like what they're doing to the story.

and a cry baby....

one the best screens in the entire thing (as in manga, amine, films) is when l uses lind l tailer as a proxy and reveals himself. light was such a crying baby. didn't like that.

i'd be happy if they take this story down a different path, much of the plotting and strategies between l and light, esp how l flushes light out and then is tried by light ammending the death note rules is very clever, but ive read it and seen it.
if i decide to follow this remake i hope they go a completely different way.

the drama version is absolutely unwatchable for me. i dun mind they create an new story different from the original plot only if they put different characters in it.
i know people will keep saying we dun need to watch the same plot again. the problem is not only about the plot setting, but also also about the character setting. it is completely odd to watch Light become a normal university student with low iq setting, L turned out to be a korean flowerboy. they aint the Light and L i used to know! they are just other people under the same names but nothing related at all. well, i feel stranger for them to redirect the plot back to the original plot since episode 5. it just makes the drama version more terrible for me.
the reason why for them returned back to the original plot is the terrible dropping audience rating in the first four episodes.

reply

Not really cause that assumes they filmed 4 episodes, saw the ratings dropped and then decided in a change in direction. In fact this was all filmed before it was released.

Overall I thought it was good, the acting was a bit substandard at times, but I like that the plot was a bit different. It was a bit melodramatic at times. Id give it a 7/10 rating.

[SPOILERS WITHIN]

Okay, this post isn't entirely accurate.

Light ends up matching his anime counterpart by the end, he just has a more realistic shift to the 'God' persona and it took a little longer. Nothing wrong with how they changed things between him and Misa this time around, as it allowed the story to progress at a better pace IMO.

I actually agree with the comments on L. He did eat cookies, but he was far from the 'L' I wanted to see. I liked the live action movie portrayal better, since it followed his anime character closer.

Near is NOT a girl, just played by one. Also, Mellow isn't just a puppet. Mellow is Near's aggressive split personality, and I actually really dig this change. It really kept me guessing as to how it was going to play out for Near in the end. In many adaptions they combine characters, but how often do you see it done like this?

Anyways, these are just one man's opinions, but I just finished the series and really enjoyed how it played out faithful to the story, but much different for those of us who have seen multiple adaptions of this awesome story. I only wish Rem would have had a more relevant part to play in the grand scheme. Her story was much better in the anime.
