The ending was different with them getting away but now what? Won't the police be after them? His mom is still sick, what about her medical needs?

After finishing the movie, it appeared that maybe she faked her sickness.

I doubt it, just based on an earlier scene with the mom & son at home and she coughed up blood. No police were around during that. She definitely was sick.
