'Mercy Street' is NOT the replacement for 'Downton Abbey' I don't...

know why there are some people saying that! In order for it to BE the replacement series for 'Downton Abbey' (applies to all series) it has to be shown in the same time-slot. This is shown in the time-slot after the one that 'Downtown Abbey' is. I don't recall which series 'Mercy Street' has replaced. Also 'Downton Abbey' has not have its series-finale yet. Once it has then the following Sunday will be the replacement series for 'Downtown Abbey'. Same for 'Merry Street'.

It's an industry term, and many reviews used the term regarding Mercy Street before its debut. Downton Abbey hasn't ended in US (but it did end in England), but usually the network program people plan shows to replace shows in ANTICIPATION of its ending. This happens all the time.

Part of it was in the wording. All they are hoping for is that it becomes as big as Downton Abbey.

That makes sense. It may or may not be good (I haven't been watching it much) but I doubt it will ever be as big as 'DA'. Don't know if Downton's true replacement will or won't be since it hasn't aired yet.

Hi Exeter,

Because it's a period drama from Ridley Scott people jumped on Mercy Street as a replacement for Downton Abbey. I agree with you, it's not. In my opinion, it's too dark to attract a massive audience like the one that follows Downton Abbey. There is, however, an upcoming series about young Queen Victoria that PBS has high hopes for.

Hi digitaldiva,

Only thing that matters is whether or not they're using the same time-slot. Genre and anything else has nothing to do with it. They could put in some crap reality-series in 'Downton Abbey's' time-slot and that automatically makes it the replacement-series.

It could even be a ripoff of 'DA' which some say is a ripoff of 'Upstairs, Downstairs' and it still wouldn't be a replacement to 'DA' if they show it in different time-slot.

The real, Britsh "Downton Abbey" ended already.

What's its replacement in the UK shown in the same time-slot and on the same channel that 'DA' used to be? In others word its true replacement.
