Chi-Raq? Really?

Chi-Raq, probably the stupidest name for a movie I've ever heard.

I used to love Spike Lee Movies, especially Clockers and 25th Hour, but instead of putting all his time into coming up with some stupid ass names like Chi-Raq, stupid creative credit lines like "a Spike Lee Joint" or hating on Quentin Tarantino, he should try to invest some time to actually tell a compelling story again. It doesn't make a good film to invent a silly name like Chi-Raq and it sure as hell doesn't make a good trailer to let a rapper sing Chi-Raq more than 20 times in its 2 minute runtime.

He didn't invent the name. Chicago residents in gang-addled neighborhoods did.

He just co-opted the name because he knows it will garner controversy, even though the movie has f_ckall to do with the actual problem that the movie is named for.

Hollywood and mainstream films in general have little intellectual or artistic value. Lee is no worse than guys like John Singleton and the trash he makes, like "shaft" with Sam Jackson and "2 fast, 2 furious." You can see the steady decline in quality. The original "Shaft" didn't need a sequel or reboot and was better than them all.

reply

Except that he named this film after a REAL PROBLEM.

Any idea why do they pronounce Chiraq like the I in Ice? Neither Chicago nor Iraq is pronounced this way.

The war on drugs is a race war and always has been since California outlawed opium in the 1800s as a way to legally kidnap and hold Chinese immigrants. Same thing for cocaine and marijuana. They claimed cocaine made black people bullet-proof super criminals and in propaganda films like "Reefer Madness" that marijuana would make people kill their parents. "The House I Live In" documentary talks about this - it explores the prison industry and drug war in the USA and how they ruin us and destroy us from within like a cancer. It would do us more good to study films of truth than some silly movie based on a silly old play of a sexual boycott that would be less effective as other boycotts probably.

I see another post by a dumbass who didn't see the movie but is crying over the title and POSSIBLY a trailer.

Trifling.
