Constant Cleaning?

Whenever I watch this show I think of how much maintenance Joanna's interiors must take -- white walls all over -- rough shiplap, has to collect dustand dirt -- wall decor that also looks like magnets for dust -- open shelves in the kitchen. Pretty, but no way I'd want it.

I agree. I hope no one eats from the dishes on those open shelves. Thinking about the amount of dust makes me squeamish! Lol. I can understand open shelving JUST for display pieces, but for dinnerware? Nope.

Agree, I don't get the open shelving for storage at all. I also don't understand why she is in love with those wooden beam fireplace mantels - yawn!

Get off the cross, we need the wood

reply

She has taken out perfectly good classic mantels -- guess wood that has been sanded is not good! Need those splinters!

I've heard the thinking behind the open shelves in the kitchen is that those are the most used items - you use them for breakfast and again at dinner.

But..............at my house, those items don't spend much time on the shelf. They are usually either on the drying mat or still in the dishwasher.

Yes...the dusting, the dusting!!

Rusty & chippy items, for example, collect dust in all the crevices and cannot be just wiped off with a cotton rag.
And also, those ultra rustic wooden items are not smooth, so the dust rag would just wedge the dust even further into all the splintery cracks!
The reason I know this, is because we used to have a very rustic wooden mantle, and that thing was so hard to dust.Drove me nuts!

SERIOUSLY? Cleaning is part of life. Have you tried a vacuum cleaner- they come with attachments for those hard to reach crevices.
I have an off white sofa and a grey cat, I clean once a week.
My dinning area has blond hardwood floors with an off white shag rug, glass table & white chairs. I have no problem keeping things clean...it's important to me that things ARE clean, not just LOOK clean.

"As I tried to teach my child, "Your world is not THE world." Meaning, your experiences in life are not necessarily universal.

I live in an old home (1974 build), in a desert city. I have replaced half of the windows with energy efficient windows, but the older windows that remain, mean that the house is constantly dusty. On the other hand, kiddo's house, which is actually out in the desert, is a late model house, with all the mod-cons and although both spouses work long hours and travel frequently for business and pleasure, their house does not get dusty at all.

So if Chip and JoJo are making sure the windows, doors, etc., are energy efficient there probably isn't a big dust issue. And as another poster stated, vacuums come with attachments that will take care of the cracks/crevices problem.

I have a friend that has an electric leaf blower that she only uses in her house. She uses it to blow off all the dust and then vacuums it up. I thought it was crazy hilarious when I saw her do it, but it works great.

And these people have a great reputation, and their customers seem to love their work. Obviously, if a buyer wanted a different style, they would choose a different realtor/decorator." o.m.
