Gaines - quit fooling around on the show, go back to your old format

Fixer-upper used to be a very good show. it was a simple show showing how some not so great houses could be made into something really special. The design aspect was definitely a big part of it as well as the different things they did to make the houses safe and secure.

Recently someone, maybe producers, have started to introduce this slapstickish aspect into the show. It is not interesting, necessary or entertaining. I don't want to hear about Chips gas problems or his excessive sweating or any other personal detail of their lives. It is demeaning and I don't think they would want their children to see them in that light. Give us more design, more fixer upper home buying tips and less garbage time which mostly consist of these two making pointless comments that are not funny.

reply

True! If I want to watch some slap stick home remodeling show, I will watch Property Brothers.

reply

Heh. My thoughts exactly. Speaking of Property Brothers - they changed from being more no-nonsense and business like to this recipe of ridiculousness that really cheapens the show.

On the other hand, the Gaines have, since I've been watching it, always had this element of playfulness with each other that is endearing.

I have watched all the episodes in just the last couple of months and I hadn't really noticed much difference between episodes as far as the fooling around goes.

If they removed the personal humor and aspects of the Gaines' life, the show would be just like any other rehab show on TV. I love the humor, including Chip's childlike behavior. He gets the job done and it's clear that his wife and children adore him. It seems they are very well known in Waco, and I would hazard a guess that they are both well-liked. I might not watch the show if the personal side was removed from filming.

I watch TV to be entertained, and humor is a part of that. If I don't feel like laughing, I watch NCIS.

To each his own.

Chip has a natural dry sense of humor and can be very funny. When it is not staged, it adds some life to the show, you are correct. I feel like the producers are really pushing him to ham it up More and More and even have his wife ham it up. She is really not the ham it up type so that really seems forced. My objection is not to their personalities which are pretty fun but to people on reality TV trying to manufacture things that are not actually real.

reply

Agree. The humor used to be "natural" and now it's so forced and planned. The producers realized how much the audience loves seeing Chip and Jo be "cute" together so now it's a big part of the show. So scripted.

reply

Exactly. That's what I hate about any tv show. They always have to overdue it and it's just constant "trying to be cute and clever". I used to watch Property Brothers and now find them insufferable and haven't watched an episode in over a year.

reply

Exactly. Like, if something is working, just let it be! Stop trying to plan and script. Ultimately this is what always ruins my favorite "reality" shows; they become "unreal." Shame.

reply

Chip's definitely upped the antics this season, but I don't mind because I find him very funny. What is getting tiring for me is how the show has completely settled into the usual HGTV "formula", where I can recite plot point by plot point what is going to happen in each scene. So annoying.

Unfortunately it does now seem so predictable, but I guess that's what happens with every renovation show when the designer/builder have a certain style. Just like every episode of Flip or Flop is that white tile, brown granite, cherry cabinets, shower with the tiled soap dish, etc. I can tell this season Joanna has been doing more "diverse" styles and stepping out of her element (the European elegant home, cowboy home, coastal home) and I appreciate it.

reply

Chip is a charming goof ball and Joanna is a tolerant eye roll spouse who gets a kick out of him to a certain extent.
I have no problem with the bit.

If I really wanted to watch them rehab a house there is always something like This Old House where they get into the nuts and bolts of it

Oh, "This Old House!" I miss that show!!!

Yup, too much slapstick, and the show is already so short that it's better when the couple focuses on the renovations, so the viewers can get some good ideas from JoJo....
