Are microwaves allowed in Jojo's kitchens?

Someone pointed out to me that he never sees microwaves in the renovated kitchens on this show. I started looking for them and he's right, so far I can't spot a single microwave in sight on Fixer Upper (in the reveals at least).

Now I'm sure there are some people out there who don't use them, but in the last 30 years or so they have become a standard, must-have for most...or so I thought. Does Joanna have some personal peeve about microwaves? Or maybe they don't look "cozy" or "quaint" enough in farmhouse designs?

IMO, it's just weird not to include a microwave in a modern kitchen design.

Maybe they are inside a cabinet.

You never see TV sets, either. Which is weird because, you know, how are they going to watch the show?

Now the tvs are what caught my attention. But with the microwaves there are modern ovens that have a microwave function so it could be tied into one of the double ovens she's famous for choosing.

reply

the "People" article says they don't own a tv in their own house

reply

A newer "trend" is to hide the microwave under a countertop/island or inside a cabinet.

I rarely use a microwave so I never noticed this.

these homes are just staged - not with homeowners furniture
so they are made to look like catalog shoots not real life

reply

I wish they would. Most people I know watch HGTV to get ideas for what they can do with their own home.

I know showing clients' electronics, etc. is a privacy/safety issue but maybe they could just stage with a bottom of the line version of the same size/color.

I know what you mean.
The AFTER shots are so overly-staged that it just seems not doable for an actual person to live in.
And I also wondered about Micros.
I really can't think of a family that has a kitchen without a Micro somewhere, these days.
And those under-the-counter Micros are soooo expensive!
So I guess that Chip & Joanne expect most people to use those itsy bitsy over-the-counter inexpensive Samsung microwaves?

I just recently started watching Fixer Upper and have been recording the reruns to watch. I was wondering about never seeing microwaves in any of the kitchens and I find myself looking for them during the final walk-through on the episodes. I finally saw one in a rerun this afternoon... It was an under-the-counter type.

Exeal, I was just about to mention that episode. It's the only one that I can remember with a microwave.

Image how hard it is to clean a microwave tucked down low like that.

reply

I agree. It seems so weird to have a microwave that low. I didn't think we used our microwave a lot till it broke and went without one for a week. Lol We use it often and it needs to be accessible.

As for the tvs I read an article that they don't even own a tv. So I guess that's why we don't see one in the finished homes. I'll see if I can find the article.

reply

Here is the link about the article which mentions them not owning a tv. I'm on my phone so I can't make it clickable. Sorry.

These days you don't have to own a TV to watch TV shows. I haven't had a TV at home in more than 5 years and I never miss a show.

reply

Watching shows on your phone or tablet is kind of ok if you want to watch TV alone. A TV is needed if you want to watch movies, sport or tv shows with your family.

I've seen at least 6 episodes that have microwaves in them. Whenever she does double ovens the top oven is a convection/microwave oven.

reply

I have been in several higher end middle class homes, and the microwave is usually hidden, like a shameful secret. :-D

I have no microwave, which I know puts me in an extreme minority. My husband and I had always had one, but a few years back, it pooped out on us. We intended to replace it, but within a few weeks we became so well-adapted to not having one (and loving the suddenly much more spacious counter top) that we declined to get a new one. We have now been without a microwave for several years and don't miss it at all. You would be surprised how unnecessary the contraption is once you get rid of it.

And not to be preachy or anything, but if you have to cook something in a microwave, you probably shouldn't eat it. Boiling water/popping popcorn is easily accomplished in a pot on a stove and takes basically the same amount of time as it would take in a microwave. It really is easy to live without one, and I doubt I will have one again, now that it's gone.

reply

Not me. I LOVE my microwave oven. I've always wanted to live in the past, but only if I can take my microwave oven and air conditioning with me!!

reply

Microwaves are great for re-heating food.
