3/8 episode: Shotgun house

Did not like the Fixer Upper this week. I still love the show, Love Chip and Jo, Love her talents I just didn't love what they did with the house. If it is a semi rare example of a shotgun vernacular house in Waco why make it completely unrecognizable as such? Raising the roof by a LOT and modernizing the exterior with the iron and such really didnt work for me.
Plus what was the logic if they aren't trying to preserve its structural integrity of spending 130K on an essentially 2 room home when they have three big dogs? They are also a young couple so children are always a possibility so you need to be able to resell it if they get too big. The resell seems like it would be tough.
Joanna does beautiful work but this project seems over done for what the house would be worth.

As an aside as someone who watches some reality TV I always watch with a skeptical eye when something seems like it doesn't add up. The couple willing to snap up the house on the spot when it was clear that the house next door was boarded up seemed a little fishy. When they came back with the fact that they could take the house and move it it kind of made more sense. Sounds a little cynical I know but that just me. I bet they knew it was going to be a tear down and if they took it they could relocate it made it all make better sense.

I thought it was one of the more interesting episodes...

first on these shows they usually already have the house picked out ahead of time
yes they were a young couple but maybe not planning on having kids? Plus a lot of people are wanting the tiny homes even with families.
Plus they are young most likely at the beginning f their careers - so they might be able to always rent out the home if they need a bigger house

that said i liked the house but would had preferred a smaller roof line as well to keep the integrity of the home

I thought the same thing about getting the shotgun and then making it unrecognizable and super modern. The only non-modern thing was their fridge. I don't get looking for an old home and then making it look like something completely different. Especially such a rare old home. I wasn't crazy about this episode.

It was an outrage. Just like the more recent and dreadful modernization of the 40's cottage, Joanna has taken to stripping vintage homes of all personality--the very features the homeowners wanted to begin with. I think it's a matter of her catering to sponsors/vendors of materials. Instead of refurbishing homes to their former glory they renovate with all new, modern materials. Just recently Chip tried to talk her out of costing the clients "thousands" by replacing original hardwood floors with new just because the boards were different sizes in adjacent rooms. He even devised a clever transition but Joanna was having none of it. Ca-ching!! flooring vendor ftw.

I watched this episode but was not able to catch it from the very beginning so I missed how they got the house though I understood it was moved.

I loved the space and the windows. I like the tiny house concept. It was too modern for me. I would never want someone to decorate my home. I didn't like the moving stairs. I would have preferred permanent stairs if they could have been worked in.

I'm just now watching the Shotgun episode on the DVR and I came on the board to see if anyone else was equally disappointed.

Even before the part about moving the house was introduced I thought picking it was a bad move.

House #2 was 1,500 sq. ft. and only $30k, while the Shotgun was half the size and $24k. So of course they go with the least practical option and put an offer in for the Shotgun. Mistake #1.

In comes the developer, who pretty much gives them an out leaving them free to buy house no. 2. Instead the couple carts the Shotgun house away for $5k to a plot of land costing an additional $30k setting them back $35k in total. Mistake #2.

Then the couple has to fork over more money to raise the roof for a ceiling fan. Really? Mistake #3.

And then they have the nerve to mention money when Chip suggests doing a loft to give them much needed space. Seriously?

And granted the final product looked nice (and finally refected the personality of the homeowner instead of Joanne), but all of the charm of the house was lost.

For a couple with 3 large dogs, the larger house certainly could have been better. As a single person, I loved the space of the shotgun if not the interior kitchen etc. I liked the loft, the moveable stairs I would not have liked but permanent would block the window and doorway.

I finally watched the episode from the start and all in all I did love what they did to the house. Since they took some floor boards out of the one house, I hope they did some other salvaging for future projects since those houses would be torn down.

I didn't like this one either. That modern iron railing she put on the outside really ruined it. I honestly thought the couple looked a little disappointed with the outside. They particularly wanted an old 20's home. You can bring a home up to date and keep some of that older home charm. They didnt do that at all with this project.

It took me three hours to figure out that FU was Felix Ungar.
