Was it me or did this totally suck?

My face is only just recovering from cringing all the way through.

I felt that some of the dialogue felt like a bit unrealistic, forced and awkward. However, I felt that it was well-handled by showing both sides of the story sensitively and the film was very well-acted and directed.

Yeh it was kinda interesting but didn't feel like much of an attempt at realism. Tbh I think the acting, especially Radcliffe, was so stilted that it died a bit of a death. That combined with that onscreen text during monologues, text messages and emails killed it.

reply

I know what you mean, but I don't get why (some) people are being so harsh on Radcliffe- is it just the Kristen Stewart thing of going 'not great in a teen franchise- are crap in everything? He was good...

reply

The onscreen text messaging weas overdone but it was nothing compared to the constant wireframing real-life.

It sucked large ones.

Woeful dross.

And it soooo wanted to be The Social Network.

Epic Fail

All the dialogue was forced and awkward. It was super cringy. I wish they had used archive footage sometimes instead of making their own garbage. What the hell was this youtube-type thing they made? I can't even.

And that radio show at the beginning where some caller calls Sam Houser a genius and goes into detail about what's great about Vice City. Who wrote that crap? The radio host ends the call with "Phil, I'm gunna let ya get back to playing with yourself" and forced laughing. The cringe train don't stop there though, because it continues with "Lets take another call, I think we got a 'female' gamer on the line."

Some scenes were just laughably stupid. Jack Thompson staring at google image results all with the same picture of Sam Houser, and in a dark room he just grits his teeth and says "Who are you?" Seriously? Was that a joke? Because I can't imagine anyone watching that and not laughing.

Every plot point is spoonfed to the viewer in such a straightforward way that it's incredibly jarring.

A lot of the intended audience are not gamers so sadly it needed a lot of exposition.
Plus the disclaimer at the beginning stated that is was BASED on a true story. Dramas with that included tend to have a lot of poetic licence such as this one.

reply

I agree. I really hated that radio call-in, the "actor" was probably a gaffer helping out, trying his best to impress without realising how unrealistic he sounded.

reply

Terrible. As a GTA fan, loved the games but watching this drivel - I wanted them to fail miserably as they were such a bunch of unlikable wankers.

In a time of universal deceit - telling the truth is a revolutionary act.

The ending made me laugh as well.
