Turned it off after 10 minutes (UK viewer) - How is this funny?

This was just not funny at all.
Myself and my partner gave it a good try but gave up.
We both love David Cross & Bob Odenkirk but this was just not doing it for us.

We were both waiting for it to change and suddenly become this completely different (Dark/funny) show, but that never happened.

I had no idea what it was as it just "popped up" on Netflix but thought I'd give it a go.

To me it felt like:
a) A lame Monty Python sketch (TBH most M.P. is lame and I'm British so we don;t normally admit to stuff like this) being zanny for the sake of being zanny.
b) SNL type humour - Again I'm from Britain and don't get this kind of "Humour". We don't even have SNL but I have seen clips of it from time to time and find it completely unfunny.

I've even spent time this morning trying to figure out what this show is exactly, or if I'm missing something.
I've found out that it is linked to a show called "Mr Show" (We've never seen this either) which I won't be rushing out to watch either.
Its not often I'll post on here but this show is very disappointing.

You're doing it wrong.

Of course you're not going to think its funny if you don't even think SNL is funny! Bob was a writer for many years in the 90s for SNL. I've seen so many bad reviews by people that clearly don't get the humor. It's really sad seeing Brits comment on this saying they loved Saul Goldman and Tobias but hated this show. This show is them in their true form. Something they truly love doing. Odenkirk is a great actor but he's done way greater things way before breaking bad. It's sketch comedy, plain and simple. If you want to watch a clip of SNL that Odenkirk wrote, go YouTube Matt foley, van down by the river. RIP Chris Farley.

Mr. Show is much funnier,
this basically feels like netflix called up bob and david and told them they'd give them a bunch of money to make another skit show but it had to be wrapped in 2 weeks time....so everything was made up on the go

It wasn't funny at all. Gigantic waste of time.

Dude. You guys had Black Adder, Are You Being Served, and Absolutely Fabulous.

If it wasn't for Python your country would be world renowned for its laugh-free comedy.

reply

Black Adder and Absolutely Fabulous are both great shows. Maybe you aren't a big fan of british comedy but, there are more than a few british comedy shows that are really really clever (The It Crowd, Peep Show, The Young Ones, That Mitchell & Webb Look, Black Books, The Mighty Boosh, Faulty Towers, Garth Marenghi's Dark Place, The Office, Spaced, Man To Man with Dean Learner, Brass Eye, Father Ted, Mr. Bean, etc).

I've only watched a couple episodes of this show so far but, it's definitely not on the same level as Mr. Show, although that show could also be rather hit & miss (but, it hit more than this new show).

reply

Except the likes of Faulty Towers, Young One's, Minty Python, and The Office are often mentioned as being many American people's favourite comedy's. Not to mention influences to American TV stars and comedians.

You're opinion is invalid.

reply

Perhaps Big Bang Theory would be more to your liking.

As a fellow UK viewer, I don't understand how the concept of a sketch-show is so alien to you.

This is a sketch-show. It's not a masterpiece, but some of it is genuinely very funny and well-observed. It took me about 10 minutes to "get into" it, also not having seen Mr. Show despite being aware of it.

And some of the sketches are quite "dark/funny" as you put it.

I'm from England but I love Bob and David's (and my man Dino's) brand of comedy, I actually picked up on Mr Show really early (2nd'ish season) thanks to hanging around Cook'd and Bomb'd irc chan and forum, so early I even put dozens of Americans onto the show.

The OP's talking out of his arse, British comedys been in steady decline for decades (far too reliant on *beep* panal shows & safe bet tween sitcoms like Inbetweeners), we've had nothing with depth of /W Bob & David. I feel they're closer to the spirit of Milligan, Cook and Python than anything we've produced in ages, dare I say it was this generations Beyond The Fringe? Sure the nature of sketch shows is that some skits work others don't, but thats the same now, than it was in Q8's and Flying Circus day (black faced Milligan and s4 Python are painful experiences).

So many quality gags in each episode to warrant Netflix renewing it for more, my only quibble was Jack Black didn't participate.

Fellow Brits don't be put off by the OP, plus if you haven't catch up on 'Mr. Show' and Dino Stamatopoulos 'Moral Orel'.

P.S. speaking of English connections, was truly surreal seeing Jimmy Savile next to Wayne Gacy in the kids bad people in heaven skit
