It would have been interesting if Vecna was actually Hopper

Who survived the blast by jumping through the gate into the upside down at the end of S3, only to be corrupted while in there.

While I liked One's storyline and the exposition for Eleven's past, they could have still had that for the last season revealing that he was the corrupter all along etc. I mean he's still alive now anyway.

It would have been hard to sell Hopper as a bad guy killing kids off, after he spent 3 seasons being a hero and saving kids. Just wouldn't be believable in the grand scheme of things and too jarring. I prefer it that they are making out Vecna has been there all along and the one pulling all the strings since the first season, as it adds to his strength as the villain, even if it's still slightly flawed.

Yeah the killing wouldn't have fitted (even if he was corrupted into Vecna).

It was something that I had thought about and story changes would need to happen: either the kids had done bad things are they would have to be captured instead of killed which would have lowered the stakes.

Despite this, I still think he should have survived by jumping into the upside down instead of "just out of the way" because it was a bit contrived that he survived but literally everyone else, including those further away, died.

I agree it doesn't seem realistic that he'd survive considering the blast, but we know he's locked up in Russia right away at the end of the same episode, so it's obviously what they planned all along.
