Let's talk about The Neverending Story

This show inspired me to watch. What a great movie.

Definitely a great movie. I was really happy to see somewhat lesser know "nerd" movies like this and Day of the Dead featured prominently instead of just big movies like Back to the Future and Star Wars. The Neverending Story singing scene and the sneaking into Day of the Dead scene put huge smiles on my face.

I watched it a few times as a kid, but frankly, I never enjoyed it. Part of it was depressing, part of it was creepy. It got even worse with the sequels. (I'm not even going to mention that horrendous 3rd sequel, and seeing as it was not canon to start with, I consider it a bad dream I had when I was 10).

What was interesting is the story behind it. I was curious and read about its origins and the making-of. It was originally a novel written by a German author and translated to English. The '84 movie covers the first half of the novel, whereas that awful sequel covers the second half. That's how long the novel was.

The entire movie was also shot in Germany, and they have two versions: the American one, and the German one. They filmed it in both English and German...I think. I also read about some calamities that took place on set, like the mechanism they used to suck the horse down under the mud malfunctioned, and the horse really did die during filming. The actor who played Atreyu refused to do any work for two weeks, he was so torn up over it. He also didn't like the idea of being painted green (despite the character having green skin in the original novel). He said it would have made him look like a piece of celery.

Turns out the author was not happy over the final film, and I don't blame him, considering how much Hollywood screws up good novels a lot of the time.

I also learned the girl who played the Childlike Empress never acted again after that movie. It was the only acting job she ever had.

Wow, you are like a wet blanket. We aren’t talking about the sequels, the original movie was the hit, most people didn’t even know that there WERE sequels. The horse didn’t actually die in real life, though the scene was incredibly sad. The behind the scenes things, again, aren’t involved with people’s nostalgia for the movie.

Why even comment if you didn’t like it? I mean, you can say whatever you want but why drag it down?

They gave the horse to the actor who played Atreyu but ultimately the horse stayed in Germany after he left.
