just so he can come back with his Hellboy gains in season 4?

We don't know whether Hopper survived or not. Personally I think he did, since he's so central to the group dynamic. I'm sure the cast will be tight lipped for the next year and a half though as fans continue to ask. The fact that David Harbour shows up for filming doesn't necessarily mean Hopper's alive - there are bound to be some flashback sequences in season 4 even if he's dead. It would surprise me if they killed him off before the very end of the series. But you never know.

We did get a Hellboy shoutout in that final fight with the Russian terminator. But if we see Hopper alive again, probably no horns.

Ever see that Star Trek:TOS ep called "The Tholian Web"? Kirk is assumed to have died on another starship, but, it turns out he's trapped in another dimension. His 'ghost' appears on the Enterprise and, once they realize what's happened, the crew have to figure out how to extract him.

If I were a scriptwriter, that's how I'd set up the next season. Hopper is trapped in the upside-down and communicates his predicament to El. Much of the season would be about trying to get him back out. That would leave actor David Harbour to participate in it as little or as much as he wanted.

I have a feeling that's one reason they had El lose her powers. Otherwise she would try to find him and see quickly he is still alive. Now they can go a few episodes before she gets them back and even if she does find him, it's still gonna be hard to get his exact location.

We've already done that plotline though, in season 1. I have a feeling Brenner and the MKUltra people, probably Eight and maybe other Hawkins Lab kids too, plus the Russians and their demogorgon project, will figure prominently next season. At least that's what it looks like they're setting up for.

I think he's alive. He's the American prisoner in Kamchatka.

It's gotta be either Hopper or Brenner in that cell. There's always a chance I could be wrong of course, but I'd bet money on it.

I believe you are correct, and I believe that it's Hopper. OR if they wanted to be sly, it could be Brenner. And then they could reveal later that Hopper was still alive. Either way I'm confidant that Hopper is still with us. He's just way too cool a character to kill off before the end of the series.

The Duffers aren't coy about it when characters are killed off. Barb looking very dead with an alien slug crawling out of her mouth, Bob getting zombie piled by the demodogs, Alexei taking a bullet in the chest, and Billy getting skewered by the Mind Flayer's version of a tank. Going out of their way to avoid showing Hopper splattered is about as big a hint as you could hope for. Remember the Golden Rule: if you don't actually see them die and there's no body, they're not dead.

Yep! I could not agree more. Looking forward to next season.

100% still alive. Too many obvious clues to ignore. No body found. The post credits scene. I think the “american” in captive isn’t him tho. I would almost guarantee he’s stuck in the upside down and the central theme of season 4 is getting him back. The show can go on without Billy. It would really struggle to go on without Hopper, the father figure of it all in a midst of childish chaos. Not to mention the levity he provides.

I agree that Hopper's appearance next year will be the most unsurprising surprise of the series, next to Eleven not being dead in season 2. Don't think they'll repeat the first season storyline with Hopper instead of Will though. Something else will happen to him. Something unexpected. I agree with Winslow that at least part of the reason El's powers were disabled was to keep her from realizing he's alive and quickly finding him.
