Who should continue the story Michael's group or El's group?

if you could only choose one set of cast who would you pick?

I don't think you could do it that way. You'd be leaving essential characters behind with either choice and pretty much gut the show. Plus, no matter what happens, or how crazy the last two seasons get, there's one fan wish they absolutely must grant: a happy ending for Mike and El.

bittersweet endings is the way it works

Happy endings are relative. There will be more main character deaths, especially near the end, so even the ones who make it pay a price. If they do a King inspired ending we'll probably see an epilogue segment set years later where the survivors gather for some occasion and we get to see what they've been up to, meet their kids, etc. It would be nice to see Mike and Eleven still together and happy.

If I were writing it, that would also set up a neat final scene where their own young daughter goes off by herself into the woods, sits down on the ground and concentrates hard, then we see a mini-gate open in the air over her outstretched palm, tiny - maybe an inch across - and she speaks to it: "It's okay, we're alone now." The Mind Flayer may be gone but who knows what else is out there? Is this thing she's made contact with friendly, or a new threat? We're left to wonder as the credits roll.

They can never be separated, I wouldn't pick just one.

Season 4 will find some way to bring them all back, so there is no need to pick who the story should continue on from when it comes to Mike and Eleven's separate groups. I still like the idea of Season 4 set a few months later during Thanksgiving or Christmas 1985 when either Mike and the gang (or maybe just Mike) is visiting Eleven and the Byers, or when the Byers and Eleven return to Hawkins to visit everyone. I think Mike is going to them during Thanksgiving and then Eleven and Byers are returning for Christmas. Can't remember exactly. Would have to re-watch Mike and Eleven's final dialogue scene together. But it would be simple/easy to do that. The writers wouldn't have to sit in the writers' room for 2-3 hours thinking of a way to get the Byers and Eleven back to Hawkins. Mike and Eleven's final dialogue scene of Season 3 gave them the answer they need to bring them back or maybe how things can get out Hawkins for once. But they aren't doing this few months later thing for Season 4. The time jump for each season ALWAYS depends on how old the kids are in real life and how old they are when filming starts. Pretty sure filming won't start until Summer 2020. So the kids will be all a year or two older by then than what they were when they started filming Season 3. So that means about a 12-18 month time jump between Season 3 and 4 to keep the characters close to the kids' real life ages. And they will probably spend about 2-3 hours in the writers' room coming up with some really ridiculous and out there reason to bring Eleven and the Byers back or have everyone go to the Byers and Eleven.

It won't be a problem. We've got the US government, possibly the return of Dr. Brenner, whatever the Russians are up to, and the Mind Flayer. All of the above will probably figure into the next two seasons - and if any one of the gang is in trouble, the rest will come running no matter how far apart they live. No need to contrive a reunion.
