This was the 80's. No one really checked your social security number for schools. Even when a school asked for the number it wasn't verified. In fact businesses didn't bother to verify anyone's SSN either as there was a time in the 90's where some people were getting into trouble with the IRS because illegal aliens were using someone else's SSN number when they got jobs such that the person who really had the fraudulently used number were having income from several other people associated with them and the IRS thought they were trying to cheat on their taxes by not filing taxes with all the income that had been reported.
