She understood everything people said from the beginning of the show. You can imagine though, what kind of environment she was living in before. Her "room" at the lab was like a prison cell. She was undoubtedly discouraged from speaking unless spoken to, and the staff was probably told not to make casual conversation with the girl. Don't want to humanize the asset. She may have been punished for any frivolous activity or behavior. Remember when she didn't understand what a friend was? Gives you some indication of how isolated and lonely her existence was.
For some reason I thought of Kurt Russell's character in the movie Soldier. Eleven had a similar upbringing, although being younger she's not too set in her ways to ever be completely normal. It wasn't going to happen overnight though. She's still not exactly a chatterbox. Complete sentences on a regular basis now, but short and to the point. Gossip and idle chit chat are bound to be a struggle. She's come a long way, but still has a long way to go. As far as education I think that may be less the case. I'm willing to bet the lab did some of that with her, and she will have had almost two years with plenty of time to read. There will be some gaps I'm sure. But she should be ready to start the ninth grade come September of '85.
