Omg it was just a peck on the lips, its not like there was tongue or anything, and if that girl wants to make it as an actress shes gonna have to be able to do an innocent peck on the lips. I mean its not like shes 6 years old and was being forced to put her tongue in someones mouth.

You know, they discussed this on Beyond Stranger Things. Two background details. First of all, actress Sadie Sink is 15 (although her character is younger). Secondly, she and Caleb are not strangers. Both of them started their careers on Broadway and met back in 2012. They're old friends.

If you listen to what she says, it's having a whole bunch of people standing around watching them - including her mother - that makes her awkward and nervous. It's a stage fright sort of thing. Like public speaking is nerve wracking for some people. It was an innocent little kiss. Stranger Things is not 50 Shades of Grey, she wasn't being asked to take it all off for the camera or film a graphic sex scene over her objections. I remember Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard saying it was awkward to film their kiss last season because it was the first time either of them had done anything like that. This year it didn't really bother them.

Any show or movie with characters in a relationship (teenagers included) is likely to involve some kissing scenes. Only if the two actors really don't like each other does that tend to be a problem. You've got to listen to what the girl was saying. She never once implied she felt violated. This was just her first onscreen kiss and she was self-conscious about it. Sexual harassment and assault is a serious problem in some circles in Hollywood, but don't go borrowing trouble or looking for sinister motives where there aren't any.

reply

She sounds very immature for a 16-year old. Or she's racist. She was talking like she was completely repulsed by having to kiss Caleb. Like damn girl you're making too much out of nothing.

reply

Everything she said was basically about this being her first onscreen kiss, and having to do it in front of all those people including her mom. I can sympathize with that. At that age I'm sure it would be awkward. But she and Caleb have been friends for years, and she never said the kiss itself was repulsive. She was a little embarrassed and the Duffers were dishing out some good natured teasing about it. That's all. If she doesn't want a legion of well-intentioned but misguided online activists speaking for her, she'd better address them herself and ask them to please stop. Talk about embarrassing.

And in related news, Kevin Spacey was spotted on set peering through a window with binoculars.

reply

Yikes!!
Close the blinds when old KS is in town!!

reply

Nonsense, he is such a great actor you'd never even know he was there. He might have been playing the character of Max when the kiss happened for all we know.

reply

Shogun, damn you!

reply

Hard to tell if they're not just being a bit facetious about in hindsight though, or if teasing isn't just a part of how their working relationship goes. I would hope if there was a legitimate concern, that would be a conversation Sadie and her parents would have had at the time.

One only needs to look at the evolution Millie Bobby Brown has gone through in describing her on-screen kisses to see there may be nothing to this.

reply

I think this is getting mixed up with the current implosion of the sexual harassment culture in Hollywood and elsewhere. What Sadie said was that it was awkward to shoot that kiss in front of so many people with her own mother among them. That's all it was. She was nervous about doing the scene all day, the same way most of us felt when we had to get up and do a presentation in front of the class. It was better if you had that class early and got it over with so you wouldn't be nervous all day. Note the fact that it's other people making an issue out of this rather than Sadie herself. Seems like much ado about nothing.

reply

I would tend to agree, and I hope controversies like this don't get in the way of candid conversations about the show in the future.

reply

Beyond Stranger Things should NOT have emphasized the sexuality of the actors. There is enough of that on the internet already.

That stated, actors kiss often in theater and film - even young actors. Tom Sawyer has a kiss, and my school did that in the sixth grade.

On screen kisses are part of the job. Off-screen sexualization of minors is not.

reply

I don't understand. They didn't talk about anything sexual.

reply

They talked about the on-screen kisses of the four actors extensively in two episodes.

They showed tweets and talked about character shipping.

That should not have been part of the conversation.

reply

Actually a lot of this is being driven by the younger fans. Most of the tweets I've seen talking about the kisses, and how cute the onscreen couples are, appear to come from the under 16 crowd. They may not base the show's script on fan feedback but those discussion segments seem to echo the sorts of things people talk about online.

That said, Matt and Ross Duffer should've laid off the teasing. It's okay to have a little fun with it but I agree with you, the joke can be taken too far. Teenagers are a lot more sensitive about being embarrassed; they should've kept that in mind, and moved on.

reply

While one of the Duffer brothers gives me the creeps, it seems like this is a cast and crew that likes to tease and joke around.

The audience and people out in cyberspace are the ones who twisted it into something more and into something to get offended about.

reply

Agreed, the internet definitely blew it out of proportion.

Which Duffer brother creeps you out?

reply

I think the one named Matt? I don't know why, I think he just reminds me of someone I know that's super creepy, they look similar.

reply

He is the more sardonic of the two.
