Could a second hive form now?

When the infection was driven out of Will it collected into an airborne mass and crashed through the door to get out of that hot cabin. Part of it was shed and dispersed outside (dead tissue?) but part of the mass stayed intact and went streaking off into the sky. So, what if that starts to grow into a new Shadow Monster? A second independent hive based in our world.

Could be a very bad situation. Not necessarily though; at its current size it probably isn't intelligent yet, but does carry at least some of Will's memories. So the new hive wouldn't be a guaranteed enemy, it might even become an ally. At the very least it wouldn't want the other Mind Flayer crossing over and conquering its domain. That could prove useful even if the new hive is just as hostile as its parent. Any thoughts?

I did wonder what would happen to that black cloud thing that flew into the sky. I know they showed the upside down at the end but we know it’s still there, El just closed the gate. I guess it could go grow somewhere else but I would hate for the Hawkins group to be overshadowed by events going on across the country. Idk, it’s tough! I want Stranger things to continue but I don’t want it to feel like it’s being forcefully dragged out either. You know?

The Duffer brothers thought ahead as far as season 4 from the beginning, when they didn't know for sure they'd even get to shoot season 2. They've got a definite idea of where the show goes and where it ends. Although they're being deliberately vague about whether season 4 will be the last, they did say its future was not open ended. Personally I think you shouldn't make it short for the sake of making it short, or long for the sake of milking every last dollar out of it, you take as long as necessary to tell your story and end it when you're done. No rush but no filler.

I think it might be interesting if a new hive emerged from that surviving cloud. Based in our world, with memories from Will (where it started out). This would be a miniature Mind Flayer that feels like it's part human and remembers bits and pieces of Will's life. I can imagine a scene where they're trying to communicate with it through a demogorgon or some other creature we haven't seen yet using Joyce's Christmas light alphabet board from season 1. There are lots of different directions you could go with this idea.

That’s comforting to know that they had the end in mind before starting. That was the same for Breaking Bad and Bates Motel and those shows were incredible. I trust them with these characters and stories so I’m excited for whenever season three comes around (2019?).
These upside down creatures are capable of evolving so I wouldn’t be surprised if that black whisp turned into something for the next season. Either way, I can’t wait to find out!
