Beaten over the head by the 80s [eyes roll]
I'd say they try too hard to remind viewers that it takes place in the 80's. I wonder why that's necessary, besides "Hey look at our cool 80's references!"

shareI don't really think they really do that much to remind us it's the 80's outside of the music and logistical things. I mean they have enormous homages to 80's movies but at times I actually found myself momentarily forgetting.
shareIf something happens in the 80s, you'd expect no less than constant reminders of 80s stuff. Why would you even think this is something to complain about?
shareI think it adds so much to the plot it being set in the 80's. Will can't just use his mobile to call for help or upload a shot of the Demogorgon to Instagram.
It's limiting what the characters can do and as has been pointed out if it's set in the 80's expect 80's stuff to be going on.
^ that.
But also it is a stylistic reference, which allows to play with visual expectations and surprises, e.g. the monster appearing, which is something the 80s movies lack (unless they show some semi-scary muppet with very limited movement).
Right. It couldn't take place now because of technology. And, honestly, now someone would call Child Protective Services on these parents, who never seem to have a clue where their children are. In the 1980s, kids were more independent.

I'm an 80's kid and agree with this post. In the 80's there wasn't constant references to our time going on at every minute. Kids are more into pop culture now, as nostalgia, and these kids felt very Millenial to me (spelling wrong, sorry). And the fat kid says, "Just Sayin'" in one scene, which wasn't spoken in this context back then. I was waiting for someone to refer to something cool as, "Sick."
Interesting. So, when you were a kid in the 80's, you weren't surrounded by things from the 80's?
That's weird, because when I was growing up in the 80's, there were plenty of things from the 80's all around me, and people were talking about things that were happening in the 80's almost constantly.
Because, y'know, it was the 80's, or as we called it at the time, the present.
I grew up in the 90's and was surrounded by things from the 70's.
share@OP- I disagree.

In the 80's there wasn't constant references to our time going on at every minute. So what are you suggesting they should have had as an alternate to eighties visuals?
I did not feel that way at all.
I am trying to imagine a movie set in a particular time frame that does not constantly remind you of its period...and failing. I suspect if a movie was not true to its period we would get people posting on the forums complaining how it did not stay true to its period.
In short: your criticism is dumb.

Kid to tend to talk about things that happen at the time, but did people ever discuss Lando back then? I cant remember it ever happening.
