Why couldn't he just be Smart?

This would have been such a great concept if he used REAL magician skills to out think these Street Thugs that he accidentally got mixed up with. A real Brains vs Brawn kinda film.
Instead we don't have intelligent enough writers to think up how to write that kinda plot in a clever way and so they have to fudge the intelligent out-thinker concept by giving the protagonist Super Powers like every comic book origin story ever made?! .. Boring and Lazy!

Super powers are what audiences are digging these days.

Just watch the film. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised! ;0)

The thing is, he's not a born superhero or anything that was actually born with these powers---he had to work extremely hard to develop what little power he was gaining, as the film shows. And he did still have to learn how to actually use them properly to get back at the thugs threatening him,and use his intelligence when it came to physics--he didn't just say, "Okay, I'm gonna just magically blow these dudes away with my little pinky finger," or anything like that. He had to study the mechanics of how his power worked to make sure he could handle the situation with his boss, and it worked. Plus this isn't an actual superhero film to begin with, anyway.
