OK SO FAR BUT...SPOILERS.

halfway through the first episode, and I am liking it but if the people's lives are in danger from really bad guys then they would have armed police guards I am sure.

I like the Lake District but is it a good location for a safe house compared to much of Scotland or the coast somewhere?

No internet and no tv? what do the guests do when it rains or at night?

I shudder to think!
Talk to one another - surely not! ;-)

It was a good thing that they didn't have a TV because then they wouldn't have to watch rubbish like Safe House.

jarcheese, as the saying goes, "what's one man's rubbish is another man's...". I found the show riveting and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I also liked the scenery where it was filmed, and the plot was not rushed, even though it was just 4 eps. American TV never has, or should I say I can't remember it having just a 4-parter. Especially one that ends with the person needing more. But for what we got, we got closure on the main story lines. I don't understand the need to give an open story line at the end and leave it like that, unless the producers plan to give another 4-parter to it. That would be great, IMO, but either way, I still have no regrets in watching it, as I thoroughly enjoyed it.

American TV does broadcast limited-run series aka mini-series, but like anything, it is based on trends. I have heard that there are several in production for the upcoming season.

They are from the coast ... Blackpool! Lake District is perfect I think.
We don t watch tv much in my house ... Odd tv drama like this and movie night on odd friday or sat ..... There s these amazing things called books and there is socialising .... music, talking, board games to name a few traditional past times!

reply

Yes I know people talk to each other and I have a flat full of books but in this day and age people get upset if they have to do a 90 minute train journey without wifi.

I would not watch tv or use the internet all night if I was with friends or family in the Lake District but I might want to watch the news or sport.

Of course the main problem would be the mobile phone issue, many people cannot spend 5 minutes without playing with their phone.

reply

I agree with the point about Plod being armed in these circumstances.
I think the location was probably chosen for reasons of cost (and production crew choice!).
It's not the most sensible place to 'hide/protect' people.

Actually, I'm suspecting that this is exactly why Mark chose Robert's house as a 'safe house.'

I'm rather suspicious of Mark, his gold old copper friend. Hm.

We also saw Mark come for Robert's birthday and immediately suggest it as a safe house, once he saw how remote it was and had no internet or phone service.

Then presto, the next day he has candidates for the safe house?

Me thinks Mark is up to his eyeballs in whatever financial shenanigans are going on--perhaps has a line on the ex prison guard's funds or whatnot, if he can make that guy and his family "go away."

So in sum, I think our impression of what a terrible safe house this really is--is correct--and it's on PURPOSE by...Mark. Mark also seems to have chosen a guy to run it who's psychologically damaged, unfit for (this) purpose and as a result has no firearm. And in the country like that it's easy to get a license for a rifle if you live remotely, due to needing to put down dying and badly injured animals and things.

But we'll see.

oOur points were almost spot on, paradesend. Mark was a creepy SOB but I don't think the family coming in as a safe house was a plan. That was a coincidence, but he did want a reason to be able to keep coming back to the house, I think, and to keep close to Katy and Robert, both for different reasons. We now know the reason for keeping close to Robert - but we're not sure of his reasons for keeping close to Katy.

I enjoyed the show. By American standards it was too short and I guess that's why we haven't gotten full closure, but for what we got I think it was very interesting and I would like to see more.

The UK managed to survive eons without the internet in a country where rain is normal. Pretty sure that life didn't start when the internet and mobile phones were invented. There's also an invention called 'the umbrella'. It's quite nifty - it keeps the rain off. Also, the Lake District is full of shops selling wet weather gear.

It's too cerebral! We're trying to make a movie here, not a film!
