They don't look Chinese at all

I quite like Asian movies and series, and I have seen a few of them.

This looks awfully fake.

They tried to make it look like real or accurate or something like, even using Chinese accented-English (which is by the way a really dumb idea). But it fails at the core: it just looks fake.

Mulan behaves like the usual empowered American girl clone. She's what Chinese call a 'banana', yellow on the outside, white in the inside.

The family scene is completely American. You can notice how they try to make it feel more authentic when the father starts to speak... and that's the only moment they get a bit (only a bit) close to simulate the original culture... but first, in the middle of that scene, it feels out of place, like they were some family from some Amy Chan book cosplaying the scene... and second, even out of the context of the scene, something feels wrong, odd.

And then the old lady starts her speech.

Damn, she's a bloody walking cliché. A badly done cliché.

They've blended the wise old lady mentor figure, and the sneaky intriguing old lady used frequently in drama (very common in series, she's often the mother or the aunt of one of the main characters). But those are two different archetypes. It's like watching a movie that replicates Obi Wan but then they make him talk like Emperor Palpatine, because, well, they're trying to replicate Star Wars so what they do is to combine characters! but without really knowing what they're combining...

If you like Asian movies, this feels so wrong. It feels like the Uncanny Valley.

So much dogma with cultural sensitivity... and they can't even properly simulate a foreign culture!

Thank you for bumping up the thread :-)

This is an movie written by American writers and directed by an American director, so you are right, it is an American movie with Asian actors.

I think they want it to work in both markets.

I think you meant to post this under the animated movie from the 90s, not the new live-action one that hasn't even been released yet.

I mean the new one.
