When will we ever stop making these chick flicks!!!

Its high time we start making more meaningful movies like Nightcrawler and Black Swan in Bollywood. We have the right talent but such movies are very far and few between(Phobia, Raman Raghav). No one subscribes to the viewpoint that...movie-making is an art form and not just a means to milk money from the audience. And thanks to the demographic dividend, with a higher percentage of youth population we are stuck in a never-ending chick flick movie phase.

I don't believe that it can ever be stopped, not with the conservative attitude and reluctance that we have in watching anything that can take us out of our comfort zone. Besides, in India, people don't follow the story, they follow the actor.

I am not defending this movie as I hate johar but would you care to elaborate your understanding of the phrase "chick flicks" ??

reply

Movies targeted at the teen and young adult audience...with their main theme as romance. Movies where everything else in the lives of people is depicted as trivial and inconsequential except for finding one's soulmate. And the lead pair is usually a perfect match made in heaven and there's a small reason that keeps them apart till the end of the movie when everything is settled in a cheesy slow motion sequence and they are supposed to live happily ever after.

I think u just defined what a sappy romantic flick is. I would like to explain it in my own words but I think the internet would convince you in a better manner.

Chick flick is a slang term for the film genre dealing mainly with love and romance which is targeted to a female audience.[1][2] It can be specifically defined as a genre in which a woman is the protagonist. Although many types of films may be directed toward the female gender, "chick flick" is typically used only in reference to films that contain emotion or themes that are relationship-based (although not necessarily romantic as films may focus on parent-child or friend relationships). Chick flicks often are released en masse around Valentine's Day.[3][4] The equivalent for male audiences is the Guy-cry film. Feminists such as Gloria Steinem have objected to terms such as "chick flick" and the related term "chick lit" [5] and a film critic has called the term "chick flick" derogatory

And your point is?

reply

Not every romantic movie is a chick flick. Its more relevant specially in bollywood where the role of the actress is just to show some moves in a handful of songs. To qualify as chick flick a film must have a dominating female cast in my opinion. Following are a couple of chick flicks that I actually enjoyed.

I am pretty sure Johar has never directed a chick flick (that doesn't mean he makes good movies 😉)

reply

Whatever you call these kind of movies, they are mind numbingly stupid. My whole point was that there are so many movies of such kind being made in Bollywood that its baffling. Movie-making is all about telling a story and in a country like ours with such diversity in culture, religion and living conditions there is no dearth of unique stories. But Bollywood has been re-iterating the same "boy meets a girl" story using all possible permutations and combinations of plot devices since more than a decade. Movie-making has been reduced to just a business meant for making more and more money rather than being an art form used to tell a story that captivates the audience.

reply

Well, cannot argue on that at all. Absolutely true. 😉

I think masala is what he meant.

THRILLER IS MY FOOD!

reply

lol good job mate :p I can't understand how he termed ADHM as a chick flick :D

Why do we fall?

Jab tak hai jaan

reply

Bahahahaha! That's true! All "Bollywood" ::cringe:: makes is chick-flicks/romantic comedies. Same stupid repeat stories, dancing, dresses and three pounds of makeup and jewelry.

reply

they make what sells, I have no problem with the films you refer to as chick flicks as long as they have a perfect story with an undercurrent of believability.......but PLEASE SOMEONE stop the dabangg franchise, and other crappy films that salman is regurgitating.......sultan was okay, bajrangi bhaijan was pretentious and the rest don't even deserve a mention.

reply

the demographic you are referring to have a wide array of choices to choose from.....it is the era of internet, and bollywood produces niche escapist films......it is its speciality and demand too.....you can never spoon feed anyone. the audience wants it, so they sell it. and intelligent films require intelligent scripts. were are they?

reply

I completely agree with the OP. The trailer for this film made me cringe. Cheesy dialogues, people romancing each other the breaking up. Soooooo boring and a waste of talent!!! I also don't understand the appeal of Ranbir Kapoor. He doesn't looks like a star, he has a weird voice and his dialogue delivery is so basic. Am I the only one?

reply

Nope...not atleast by the number of people agreeing with the points being made here. About RKs acting, the thing is the directors and actors don't like to spread their wings and flex their skills after being rewarded at the box office for these mindless movies. Once a half decent stupid movie becomes a blockbuster hit like Dabangg or YJHD...everyone jumps on the bandwagon to make more such masala and romantic movies but with extra mediocrity added into the mix. Only few people like Anurag Kashyap and Radhika Apte are in the industry who care about what they do... Everyone else is in it for the money.

reply

Never. As long as it sells and makes money, it continues.

reply

As long as people will spend their money to watch such movies.
Maybe "never".
