I could wipe my ass with 110 sheets of printer paper and come up with a better screenplay that they did for Howard the Duck.

it was a dig at Marvel. Howard featured in the after-credits scene of Guardians Of The Galaxy as part of The Collector's....collection.

reply

Really? I totally missed that GOTG thing. It's funny bc the comic is actually snarky and entertaining. I have no idea why the movie sucked.

Here's the scene, which occurs at the very end of the credits;

Haha, it wasn't a dig at Marvel because of the after credit scene in Guardians.

Howard the Duck was a movie that came out in 1986 that was under the Lucasfilm production company with Universal. It was a really bad movie and the joke was poking fun at that.

reply

Yeah it was, this is DC you are talking about. When they can, they will make fun of Marvel characters. Howard is under Marvels Helm.

reply

Completely irrelevant to the Guardians of The Galaxy thing though. Howard the Duck was also under Marvel in the 80s. Seeing as how everything else was an 80s reference, them not wanting to watch the movie Howard the Duck because it was really bad would have been an 80s reference. Not a 2016 one.

I thought this movie was awful. The only part i liked was when Howard the Duck showed up and the music. I

I was surprised they were allowed to use it since Howard the Duck is the property of Marvel and other TV shows have been stopped from saying the names of movies and TV shows but maybe Marvel is okay with it 'cause they see it as a harmless joke. Still I am surprised there wasn't another DC vs Marvel war over it.

Context.

They can't stop you from referencing a film or publication. Acting like their character is active in your world is a different thing.

Oohh. Okay. Thanks for clearing that up for me Skyhawk. I remember in 'Lois and Clark: The new Adventures of Superman' somebody called Superman the Caped Crusader and he fixed them up and said that was Batman and he wasn't real but I thought they only got away with that 'cause it was a DC show.

I'm surprised 'Heroes' never made any mentions of DC or Marvel superheroes.

Heroes shamelessly ripped off the ending of Watchmen for their first season. Which is why they had to change the ending for the movie.

Hey, they mentioned Superman in the first Spider-Man movie. I don't think anyone's going to get sued for an offhand reference.

As far as I know, you don't need anyone's permission to mention the name of an actual movie or TV show. They can't claim that there's a character named Howard the Duck in their universe because then it becomes them using the character (even if in name only), but they can factually state that such a movie exists.

In fact, movies and TV shows don't strictly need permission to show real products like Coke or Pepsi as long as they're not making fraudulent claims about the product or making it the centerpiece of the story. Of course the various companies would like you to believe otherwise, and there's nothing to stop them from filing a baseless lawsuit against someone for showing their product or mentioning their movie. They probably won't win, but it will cost the person/company they're suing a buttload of money to fight it.

I think you guys are all overlooking the fact that we now know that Marvel Comics exist within the Arrowverse!
