THIS is how they should have handled the presence of a black soldier

Instead of pretending that there were integrated units at that time and that white and black soldiers even did basic training together and that a black sergeant could have possibly been in charge, just have a brief scene early on when one of the white soldiers asks "what is HE doing here", followed by the reply "do you speak French, Private? No? He does, so just shut up and do your job".

I agree that it is a bit of a problem for me too (as a history buff), but I accepted it as alternately reality, like Lawrence Fishburne playing Hamlet or something.

How should they have handled the presence of re-animated corpses?

It seems like you are saying that since the movie has elements of fantasy, history can be completely disregarded, even though it takes place in a very specific time and place.

Would you have accepted the presence of a female lieutenant leading that unit of paratroopers?

Yes, I would've. Because if the presence of zombies didn't bother me then why would the presence of a woman?

The movie didn't have "elements of fantasy", it was fantasy, period. None of the characters were based on real people. Their mission to win D-Day by destroying a radio tower was completely fictional. And don't even get me started on the serum and the impossibility of its effects.

This film might as well have taken place in an alternate universe where the rules (and historical prejudices) of our world don't apply.

In fact, let's say it did. There, are you happy now?
