Season 3.....like night and day......VASTLY improved...

So far (3 episodes in)....Season 3 is like night and day compared to previous seasons.

I do not know what happened, but this show has greatly improved. I looked if there were new writers, but it does not appear that way.

Wish more people here were watching it.....

reply

I hope so, because I just started season 2, and honestly it seems really stupid so far - so many inconsistencies!

I am guessing the improvement is due to Netflix getting involved.

reply

Well, Season 3 is almost like a new show, however, Episode 5 or 6 started a terrible sequence that seems right out of the quality of Season 2 (completely unbelievable). Still, Season 3 is like a different show when compared to Season 2.

I'd really like to see some inside comments on the show because even the filming techniques are better.

Though it is very surprising how this show, Wentworth and Orange Is the New Black all share similar themes.

reply

I haven't watched either of those, though...

Can I ask you, does Macarena ever end up with Fabio?

In an early episode (I think it was the first one) of this shortened season 3 after he tells her he is willing to wait however long it takes for her to get out, she tells him to move on because his remaining to hang on is only making things harder for the both of them and he is only staying around because of guilt. So he does.....

reply

Aww!

The thing is, I feel like if they don't end up together, there is no reason to watch the show. It's just too hopeless, there is nothing to look forward to.

Btw, I am seeing on IMDB that the characters of Saray, Sole, Zulema are in 40 episodes, but Macarena is in 28 and Fabio - in 25? Does the show actually go on without them? Or is that just incorrect?

Well, the Macarena character was seriously hurt in one of the early episodes and was not seen through the remaining episodes, including the 3rd season finale. So that had me wondering if her role is done and if they are going to kill her off. Season 4 starts at the end of September. And while Season 3 did have its jump the shark moments, it did end on a heck of a cliffhanger involving Saray and Zulema.

reply

Ah, I see.

I am just wondering if I should cut my losses now.

You can tell it's not an American show - like why would I even continue watching without the main character?? It's not like I care about any of the others. And on top of that this romance that they keep teasing never actually materializes. I don't want to have to watch five seasons for something to finally happen between Fabio and Macarena.

Oh well. πŸ˜’

reply

Well....it really has mostly improved and in the third season they did introduce new characters and a new plot that works really well, though they're still parts they could get away from (the inmate interviews for one and the one inept chubby detective - he just keeps messing up over and over again and it is certainly old).

reply

Okay, I finished season 3. It was a lot easier to get through considering that it's literally less than half the length of season 2.

Thoughts:

1) I thought the story line with Curly falling in love with the police woman was stupid (especially starting with that scene of her escape to see Macarena: "It's the only way I know how to love" - barf) and wholly unnecessary. I am guessing they inserted it to make us somewhat care about that woman at the end?.. Didn't work.

2) I thought the character of the snitch Mercedes was despicable, and by the end of the season was kinda rooting for her to die.

3) So glad Anabel is gone. Zulema is a psychopath, but at least she is interesting (just look at that subplot with the hens!). Anabel on the other hand was a character with no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

4) That the guard actually bought it that it was Anabel who killed Unai made absolutely zero sense, however. He was killed the night of their arrival, Anabel didn't know him from Adam, and couldn't have known about the financial goings-on at thΠ΅ prison at that point in time either.

5) The Chinese gang stuff was a nice departure from the usual fare.

6) So interesting to see, repeatedly, that the criminals are basically being watched over by other criminals.

7) Minor gripe: what's the deal with the trans guy at their prison? I mean, it's obvious he identifies as a woman, but it doesn't seem like he actually transitioned, and I don't think they'd assign you to a women's prison if you have a penis.

Season 4 will be available on Netflix on 9/25! It's kinda trash πŸ˜‚, but it pulled me in, and now I want to see how it ends. Also, Macarena is coming back at the end of season 4, and for the next installment - Vis A Vis: Oasis.

If you watch Wentworth and Orange is the New Black, you'll see so many similar threads (like a transgender inmate and chickens, among other things). It's like these three shows kept watching each other and borrowing.

At the start of Season 3, I was so hopeful and then they have to keep doing this outrageous stuff, some of what you touched on - the affair (like, really, is any country going to allow a conjugal visit between an active police officer and a prison inmate? and is ANY reasonable person going to even try?); then the shoot out at the beach. Come on (though I did like that final scene, but imagine Zulema was just "grazed").

I loved the interjection of a new rival gang because they are so menacing.

And that Castillio.....they have to get rid of him. ANY cop with so many blunders would have been long gone.

And didn't you just love how they dealt with the mad doctor? Finally......what a good actor to pull that role off. So successfully slimy.

reply

Yeah, the acting is probably the biggest part of what keeps me watching. "Nosferatu" was great - I especially appreciated the scene with that evil grin when he was holding Saray's baby in a cage, lol.

What did you think of item 4 on my list above?

reply

Agree with you on Anabel and you are right about how characters would believe huge BS with just a bit of nudging or misdirection.

One irritation I have though is how people flip flop all over the place. For example, remember when Saray learned Zulema caused the abortion and said Zulema was dead to her after that? And then they become BFFs again.

But then you get interesting happenings when sympathy is felt for the character Saray after her encounters with the doctor.

Still, I thought this season was a pretty good improvement.

reply

Yeah, it bothered me the whole time. Macarena also kept talking to Zulema like nothing happened after the forced abortion. And Zulema went back to break out Saray even though the latter betrayed her. The show is full of those things. Even what I mentioned in my post the other day - Fabio telling Macarena they aren't actually in love, they are just lonely and desperate, and then turning up at the new prison with a ring the next time we see them - was also a complete 180.

I'd say writing a carefully structured plot obviously isn't this show's forte.

And I don't know how many times they can keep doing it that literally any deputy Castillo has ends up dead soon after getting the job - it's becoming a joke already.

reply

I just got to that scene. The way he looked there, I am over it. Funny how some hair choices can totally change a person's look. The idea of their romance just isn't hot anymore. (That's not to mention how butch Macarena is this season.)

Also, last time they had a conversation (if we can call it that) about their relationship, Fabio was a total dick about it, and now he is suddenly all in love and willing to wait forever?.. The sudden change in disposition doesn't make for believable writing, IMO. It all felt to me like there were multiple important scenes between the two of them missing between then and now.

ETA: I understand why they handled it that way though - because they were writing both characters off the show. But seriously, that progression of things between Fabio and Macarena was hella rushed.
