Rosa Lee's Hair

Very minor detail in a STUPENDOUS show but is it driving anyone else crazy that RosaLee won't put her hair up??? I get that she always had to wear it up in the house and it is liberating to have it free now but I need her to be liberated via her hair once she is ACTUALLY free! She gave that ribbon to Boo who already had her hair braided and the whole time I was screaming at the TV for her to use it to tie her OWN hair back! Then when she got caught in the tree by her hair she STILL hasn't put it up! I don't understand the logic behind this!

reply

Did they even show when she took her hair down? Was it when she gave Boo the yellow ribbon, because Rosalee's hair had to have been held up by more than just that?

It doesn't really bother me that Rosalee's hair has found freedom. (Haha) I did cringe when she got it stuck in that briar patch, though. I've hiked through places like that, and just getting your clothes hung up can be panic-inducing.

I BELIEVE (but not 100% positive) her hair came down during her attack/ attempted rape. The ribbon she gave Boo was never even in her hair. She found it in the room she was cleaning and she took it, it was the masters daughters ribbon I believe. I believe that her hair was just up by pins I guess but as much hair as she had you would think there would have been some pins left in there to use lol. Or just braid it and tie it with a vine or something! lol

reply

She had the ribbon in her hair at the dance

reply

You are right she did! I forgot abut that. I was thinking she never used it after she found it cleaning (what I assume was) the daughters room!

reply

No, she didn't take the ribbon from the master's daughter.

Remember after she saw the daughter's yellow ribbon, she bought one from the tinker guy?

i would definitely find some way to tie it back though. i have really long, curly hair and it just gets in the way when you are running.

reply

Oh wow thanks I must have missed that! I didn't know she bought one, I thought she took the one she found!

reply

I don't think she has anything to put it up with. I don't know what they tied hair with back then but she gave her only ribbon to Boo and even though it got stuck in a bush that one time I don't think her hair is the biggest thing on her mind. But I did see in a preview for next week she has her hair tied in some way.

reply

Yes she Def has other things on her mind but she doesn't need a ribbon to put it up. She never wore ribbons before and it was always up I assume by hair pins if those existed then but she tipped her dress so all she needed was a small strip of cloth to put on the end of a braid (or plant vine or anything lol). It's not a major issue or anything but I would have thought she would at least have put it up after it got her caught and slowed her down. Just a small point I noticed that I found odd.

I think Rosalie's hair is the last thing on her mind. She's running through the woods and living like a wild animal because she has a price on her head (dead or alive) so basically the only thing that's keeping them alive is their quick thinking. She has to always be on the move and she's also being chased by dogs and anybody who can read and could use that reward money, which is a substantial amount so she and the rest of them have to always be on guard and always on the move so she doesn't really have time to be distracted or even concerned with how she looks or pinning up her hair. She has more important things on her mind and on top of all the running, being chased and always having to be on guard, they haven't had any food to eat and didn't even have any clean water to drink. I don't know how long they've been on the run and in these conditions but yeah, I'll assume that pinning her hair up is the least of her worries. Also, you have to think about the fact that, as a house slave, she had to always keep her hair pinned up and as much hair as Rosalie has, that is a heavy weight on her head, especially if it's all pinned up in one area of your head so I can imagine that letting her hair down and free, is more comfortable than it being pinned up and the only other alternative I can think of to free her head of all of that extra weight and pressure would be to just cut it all off. That's just my theory. But then, it could also be something as simple as the producers thinking that Jurnee is sexier with her hair wild and free and we all know that sex sells.
I woke up this way...

reply

I do think it's down for production reasons bcs even though she has other things on her mind it's not like she would have to tie WHILE running, they have spent the night in places and in my mind, if my hair almost got me caught bcs it tangled me up in a tree/bush and allowed a slave catcher to get that much closer to me tying it up would def happen in order to increase my chances of it not slowing me down again. Just my opinion of course since I've never been in that situation but putting it in a braid with a strip of her dress at the end to keep it out of the way seems the logical thing to do to me lol

I was expecting her to braid her hair after that incident.

reply

I was too! I get it before, she probably didn't think much of it slowing her down since she has always had it pinned and never dealt with having it free but after that happened I don't understand why she left it that way lol Oh well still a great show!

reply

I don't see any point in tying it up. It will more than likely come down anyway. They are doing a lot of hard running its not going to stay in place.

reply

Having it not slow her down by getting her caught in bushes seems like a good reason to me but yes it would probably come back down at some point but it seems worth it to me to braid and rebraid if needed. Just my thoughts on it.

reply

I'm more bothered by the fact that she seems to sit with her legs open all the time.

reply

I've noticed that too! Lol

Interesting anecdote about that...

In "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn," the boys dress as girls in one of their shenanigans. They are tested by the older woman they are trying to fool when she throws them an apple. It's mentioned that Tom caught the apple by spreading his knees to make a "net" of his skirt, because that's the way girls would've caught something while sitting. A boy would've brought his knees together, to prevent the apple from falling through them, if he missed with his hands.

Also, it is freaking hot in the South. How else is a girl to air out? 

reply

Having longish hair I often have it up just to stay a little cooler in Florida heat.
Having said that I have no idea what temperatures the show was filmed in- it just make sense to have it up for comfort

reply

Her hair came down when she was getting attacked by the overseer

reply

Well, I'll just add my two cents...

Like someone said earlier, I think Rosalee keeping her hair up was the last thing on her mind when she was running. She had much bigger things to worry about, like dodging slave catchers and surviving the wilderness. Also, she gave away the only ribbon she had to pull her hair up, and she didn't really have time to put in the elaborate braid she always wore it in when she was in the big house (plus, once again, I think braiding her hair didn't even cross her mind).

Here's another theory, though...Rosalee wearing her hair down could be symbolic. When she was in the big house, she always wore it up. She was prim, proper and oppressed. The minute she decided to run, her hair was disheveled. She was scared and unaware of how strong she really was, but she was willing to take a chance. Once she realized how strong she was and how much she wanted to be free, her hair came completely down, literally. Just a thought.

Notzi

He attacked her before she ran. I'm talking about her hair since she has been on the run, especially since it got her caught in the tree that time. Seems like she would braid it or something to keep it from slowing her down again
