How did Earnestine...

Get away with murdering Tom?

reply

She made it look like suicide. That's why she untied his hands and kicked the stool over.

She made it look like he hung himself. Remember he was acting "remorseful" after he killed Sam.

Thanks. That clears things up for me.

How she got away with the murder is not clear to me. I find it incredibly fortunate that nobody noticed two wine glasses -- Ernestine did not clean up the crime scene. Nobody speculated about Tom's motive for suicide: he had everything he wanted; he was headed to Washington as an elected official; he had a beautiful wife; family; plantation; slaves. Tom had made reservations and packed for his trip. Life for him was pretty good. It seems that no questions were asked.

I think Tom got what he deserved. Even though Ernestine got away with it, I wanted them to show just how clever she was. The affair between Ernestine and Tom was a good back-story. Ernestine is a very interesting character. She is strong, smart, determined, vengeful, passionate....and dangerous. They could have made more of that situation. It seems that they just walked away from it.

Maybe the man who hung him cleaned it up for her? or maybe since it looked like a suicide no one put much thought into the surroundings. I could see them not questioning his suicide. He did have a lot going for himself but his pride and joy had always been that no slaves had ever successfully escaped from his plantation and now 7 had and they did it so well their group was named and word was spreading like wildfire about about them and nothing he was doing was making that situation any better including hiring the best tracker around. That had people questioning his ability to handle the elected office and was a stain on his reputation in his eye so I could see where they may have assumed he was distraught/depressed over that and killed himself. Just a thought.
