Mute, yes, but that doesn't mean he can't hear and see what's going on. He knows the preacher talked Tom into haning Sam. He probably also knows Earnestine and Tom were sexual, and Sam was her son.

I would like a little more background on him. Someone said once that it may be Ernestine's father, brother, uncle, cousin. She told the man she killed someone. You don't say that to random strangers.

Yeah you know that makes sense! I also found it ODD that she would just Jump up out the blue and tell this random presumably "Uncle Tom" all of this info.

You may be onto something there. I mean why would he help out like that and take that favor to the grave with him???

I thought he may be a relative too or maybe they have just been there together for so long they have a familial bond? Either way she could have needed to get that info off her chest and since he is unable to speak she felt safe revealing it to him since he obviously wasn't going to go snitch. I still want to know exactly what he was doing with that egg/dye he was mixing up. Was that just paint for the preacher or was there some other use? It seemed a detailed scene just to be paint for that fool!

I don't think they're related but I do really want his story and more attention on him -- he better look out for James i.a.
